Cats and cattle

I helped a neighbor sort his replacement heifers the other day. When I got home this analogy came to mind. You know how cheetahs and lions are both members of the cat family? They belong to the same species but are very different. One is lanky and fast and one is built less for speed and more for power. Some people like tall and lanky cattle and some people like more body and power. My neighbors herd and my herd both belong to the same species and breed even couldn't be more different. I'm not sure what sires the bulls he has been using but I would classify them as carcass cattle from their look and style. They probably grade and yield off the charts but it's hard for me to look at the females and not want more body and guts in them. Just my preference and I'm sure there are people on both sides. My Dad is retired now but he thinks I need more leg under my cattle. We have some good discussions on that topic. I would guess my cows at 5.5 frame but weigh 1300-1400 pounds in good flesh. To get more leg you would need to use 7+ frame bulls. Thank you no. We used to have the kind of cattle that I'm not so fond of now so I have been on both sides of the fence.

Makes you wonder about the definition of "breed"!

Ask your Dad what the value of cannon bone is.

I know Robert Mac I keep telling him the air under a cows belly doesn't weigh very much. He went through the downsizing of cattle back in the 50's and when he sees a deep thick cow he thinks that's where I'm headed. I think my cows are plenty big the way they are. It's funny because he was the one that warned me we were using to big of bulls back in the 80's and he was right. I didn't believe him back then and I don't believe him now. Maybe he is right again. Hope not.
