Quite some time ago, we bought a Simmental cow at an auction knowing she was old but quiet. She was always the last cow in the line when we moved them or when them came to a new bale. She moved so slowly that when the rest of the herd would all be in place, she would be only halfway there. She wouldn't be hurried, either.

But why complain about that when she raised two pairs of twins the first two years we had her and then a big single the last year she was here? Just a big, gentle slow moving old girl that would mother those babies like nothing you ever saw. It was like she needed twins to handle all the lovin' she had to give them.

We will never forget what she looked like in the fall with a 5-600 pounder on each side of her just about lifting her hind end off the ground trying to bunt that last drop of milk out of her. Those big, sulky rascals would just rock that poor old girl by the time they got weaned.

That, plus the sight of her slowly meandering up the trail, gently plodding along as if she had all day! Never did a cow move with the unhurried dignity and gracefulness of the one we called "The Old Lady".

When the kids were at home, cows were named, just like Jigs said. Now only a few not so favorite ones get a name, but soon they get a bus ticket too. If one is protective this time of year, she gets a name or at least a reputation without the bus ride.

We have a pile of Charlie Brown characters in our herd. You reminded me of my uncles brand; OUT. His cows were often out, it was his way of extending the grazing season. Didn't like it though when his 300 cows were out in my paddocks but it was up to us to put them IN.

Oh no, Janet has never crawled through a fence a day in her life... that's grounds for execution at this place. What I meant was that she usually is within 1/4 mile of the gate into the next pasture to turn into, a few days prior to moving. She seems to know the rotation schedule better than me!

We have a neighbor who has breechy cattle, and I absolutely can't stand them! They can shuffle their way through any decent four wire fence, and then turn around and coax their calves through. If we could use electric fence on our forest allotment, those sisters would get fried! Unfortunately that isn't an option :D

When we had cattle, they almost all had names. I was bad for that! Giving them a name gives them personalities which usually turned them into family for me. Which in turn made them very hard to sell. When I still go over to the best friend's, I say there's so and so, and he says who???

Some names we had:
Agnes
Pudding
Moppy
Iggy
Poppy
Fatty Arbuckle
Renny
Red
Chubby
Skeeter
Mona
Mitzi
Bitzi

I could go on and on!
And yes, there were a few that had unmentionable names on here! :) Don't we all?

Had a cow that got wire around her neck....had to run her in to cut it off - she was mean and her name was *drum roll* wire neck, she's long gone now.
The 123 cow that fell on me, her name is now Frankie.
The ones to watch carefully when tagging their calves are known by their number.

77 - Trixie
203 - Misty (we call her Debbie - makes MCG mad  )
13L - 13L

We've only got 2 cows named on the whole place.

High Jump- old cow that lives up to her name along with markings to match

The other is a cousin's old bucket calf named Sparkle. Us grandkids got gutsy christmas last year and went out and broke her to ride so she'll be here for a while as a conversation piece.

Jake- I have one thats marked like that- and its about the only one on the place named...She's number 392- call her Star...Good mother- kind of miserable to be around when she first calves (which she did last night)- but I quarantee nothing will get her calf...Just have to leave her and calf alone for a few days...

She came from a purebred angus outfit-and was an AI calf out of what was supposed to be an angus bull (can't remember the sire)....Anyway she has a star in her head, white hind stockings, white udder, and white tail
 Either something else got mixed into the semen straw- or some old Maine or Holstein bloodline popped out in the back of some pedigree :???:

Do have a "Tillie" cow too...A half holstein we keep around as a nurse cow...

Interesting--Now thats something this cow doesn't do--she's always had all black calves...I think it was just a fluke- and something back in the genetics of the build them "bigger, better, faster" period popped out...

With so many critters it's hard to name em..BUT...I did always tell the guys that my kid was gonna learn his colors before he started school by listening to them...for instance:

That Black *&^%
You ole Red *&^(
Dirty Gray $%^&*
Yellow Son of a &%$#@....

I was sure he was gonna to tell the teacher that he knew his colors...and then some! lol
