Here are a few of our late calving herd. lol. When I went out to feed this AM, I could see a cow off by herself, and I figured something was up. As I got closer I found out that the bull that crawled in last May, wasn't just eating grass.

Your cattle look to be in very good condition. How many acres per cow does it take where you're at?

Denny, that is a tough question, but a canned answer would be 30-35 acres year round. The area of our ranch where these cattle are running didn't receive quite as much moisture as the rest of our ranch last year. On an average year they should have been able to graze most of the year on the acres they have to run on, but we have been supplementing them with cake for almost a month now, and have been feeding them some hay every other day since the weather got bad. And for a brief period, every day. It is hard to feed hay every other day and make them graze too, but we are trying it. These cows were mostly purchased last winter and will not calve till late April this year. They will go on a fresh pasture mid-April, and go back off the hay, hopefully.

Cattle seem to be in good condition, Tap. I sure like the looks of that country. Wide open with a good view. Like to ride with you sometime. Also like the fact that you leave a little grass behind.

If you are thinking of chinks, I highly reccommend you get hold of Jinglebob. He does great work and they darn sure fit. Also it will give him something to do while he is on his ranchers.net sabbatical.

It looks like you still have a fair amount of snow.........and a good looking black calf! The Hereford bull kinda sticks out like a sore thumb, though, don't he?

The "sore thumb" might come from counting the extra dollars he can generate! :D :) :)

Thanks Saddletramp. Come up sometime. How about late June or early July when we brand the late bunch? :) Maybe Soapweed, and Jinglebob would want to come up too and we could have a ranchers.net party. The invitiation is out.

I didn't know about Jinglebob missing till you got me curious to research what you meant. Let's see if he goes thru with it. He might be ok after getting over the first week "shakes". :) I don't read much other than ranch talk and coffee shop, and don't get all of that read always either. The pictures take up so much time that I don't get around to the rest of it. Then there is work that gets in the way too. lol.

That brocklefaced cow is what it's all about-good set of cows you have TAP.

NR, I like the brockle faces, and white faced cows too. Our home raised herd is a straight angus herd, and hard to beat. But we are hoping that since the crossbred herd is going to calve later, we will get some highbred vigor to make up some of the difference. We were ten days into the first cycle when we got the cows sorted for color, but we put hereford bulls on the straight black cows, and angus bulls on the crossbreds after that. In the future we may use all hereford bulls on them when we pull the replacements for this herd out of our all black bunch. The calves off our later herd will all be sold eventually, so we are concerned with weight, and calving ease will have to be a must with that bunch. They are not calving where it will be easy to look at them, or do much with them.
