Cattle Software

My son is now forbidden to touch my computor. He was using it and the icon to clean up unused desk top short cuts came up. Instead of asking if he should click it, he did.
Some how through this I lost my complete set of records for our cattle dating back to 1978.
The only lucky thing is I had saved it all on a disc. Now I have to figure out how to get it all back on there.

Does anybody know how to do that?
I have Ranch Manager USA from Lion Edge.

Not an expert by any means, but the program should be in the unused desktop shortcuts folder, did you try looking in it to see if its still there? did you also look in the recycle bin? or search for the folder and try to restore it. If all that fails and you have it on disk, just reload your info disk and it should restore it. We use the Aims program for Angus and I have moved the info to different computers several times without a problem and I'm not computer savy at all... hope it helps :)
if all else fails, see Jigs' message!!!!

Thanks jigs that is a good option.
Called the company who makes the program and it took us around 15 minutes to finally find all the info.

Yanuck I had moved from another computor onto this one and had no trouble.
It was hidden in a different folder. There are like 6 different ones and it was find which one it was hidden in at the time.
Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. :D

Now you need to save it from your C drive to your D drive. That way if your main drive goes up in white smoke the info is usually on the parallel drive. Then go a purchase a memory stick and back it up one more time. It's not a matter of if it will crash but when. Don't forget your tax files and your pics.

I email "spare" copies of most of my records to my hotmail account. Free and easy. Harder to lose than a memory stick, fireproof also.

No such thing as too many backups!

I also use the Ranch Manager software. I've had it for a couple of years, but didn't really get into it too much. They brought out a couple of upgrades, and now it's a lot better. This is the first year I've really used it a lot, and I'm getting to like it more and more. I also got the Palm pilot version to take with me, and it's proving very handy. Picked up a palm pilot on ebay for $65.00, and just love it.

How do you like the software? Have you tried it with a tag reader? That's kind of the way we're intending to go with it, but don't know yet how well it'll work.

Kato I really like it. I have not tried to do the tag reader.
Found it on the internet and got the trial edition. I got so involved in it that the next thing I knew I had our complete records in it.
The only thing that drives me crazy about it is the sire and dam tab. I have to scroll through the whole list before I can find the one I want, even though most of those animals are gone.

Going to put the records on another disc and put it in the safe.
Hopefully I don't have to go through this again.

Do you process the ones that are gone when you sell them? If so they should disappear when the next year's data is active. Until then, they have that little sold notation beside them, and you can change the order it shows up by clicking the top where it says notes. I use the search function a lot too, especially in the Palm version.

There are a lot of little things in this program that are handy. I don't know about you, but it took me a while to start finding them. I'm still finding them.

I just wish it would export to excel, especially for age verification. CCIA uses Excel as the format for uploading ages. I'm going to send them a suggestion for that.

When the cow or bull goes to the ring I click on the "Sell Animal" icon and enter the info and click OK. They disappear from next years list.
the problem mainly arises during calving and I am entering in the calves.
I wonder if there is a different way to add the calves to the dam records? That way I can avoid this mess. I normally use the "New Animal" icon.
I contacted Lion Edge about it and they said the registered and line one guys really liked it. I can see where it works for them, but it's a big pain for me.

In the list view, click on the cow to highlight her, then click on the little picture of a stork with a baby that's on the bar at the top. It will start the "calve the cow" sequence of forms. :D

Assuming it's on your version.... :?
