April 17, 2007

San Lucas, CA (April 17, 2007) ~ The United States Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) announced today the organization has retained Jess Peterson, a Montana native, and Big Sky Strategies to represent the cattle industry in Washington, DC.

"USCA is pleased to have negotiated a working agreement with Jess Peterson to represent cattle producers on Capitol Hill. With Farm Bill debate well underway, it is important that the industry have solid representation and a voice in the process. There is no time to waste," said Jon Wooster, San Lucas, CA, USCA President.

"Jess has the experience and insight necessary to enhance our policy efforts," Wooster said. "Jess was raised on a Montana ranching operation. His knowledge of the industry and issues is second to none. USCA is fortunate to have retained such a qualified individual."

Lee Engelhardt, USCA Interim Director and cattle producer from Washington State added, "USCA is pleased and proud to announce that we are putting people in place who know and understand the needs of the cattle producers, who will monitor the day-to-day action on Capitol Hill, and who will ensure that producers are informed and engaged in the politics that affect our industry."

Big Sky Strategies is a bipartisan government relations firm founded by Peterson and Abra Belke, another Montana native. Belke, a graduate of Gonzaga University and the George Washington University, specializes in communications and organizational development. Belke will assist USCA as it grows in membership.

"Now, more than ever, cattle producers need to be heard in Washington, DC," commented Peterson. "With Congress working on the Farm Bill and the Department of Agriculture enacting policy, cattle producers will have a lot of opportunities to get involved in the process. I am honored to be working with USCA to bring the concerns of cattle country to Washington, DC."

"From the beginning, the mission of USCA has been to strengthen the cattle industry’s presence in Washington, DC," said Wooster. "By hiring Jess and Abra, we have taken the first important step towards achieving that goal."

"The policies made this year will have a profound effect on the future of our industry. Now that we have our Washington, DC representation in place, USCA is moving quickly to ensure that grassroots producers are represented on the issues so critical to our economic viability."

Established in March 2007, USCA is committed to assembling a team to concentrate efforts in Washington, DC to enhance and expand the cattle industry’s voice on Capitol Hill. For membership forms and other information visit www.uscattlemen.org
