Nice pics soap! Hasn't the weather been wonderful? (except that moisture would be better for the future) Too bad I'm not out. Well have a great Thanksgiving. Still no plans for us...  We are adopting the don't ask don't tell policy in this home I guess. Later

It was nice seeing your pictures awhile back of moving cattle. Glad that "Double A" is getting along so well with Tomcat. Tomcat always liked to feel useful, and I know he is in the heighth of his glory helping to turn a young man into a fine cowhand. Thanks for giving the old gray horse a good appreciative home.

Nice pictures, looked like the 'girls' enjoyed their day  Is Tomcat the horse you had pictures of your dad roping off of last year?

Yes, Tomcat is the same horse. I bought him as a two-year-old and broke him myself. He turned 24 years old this past spring. Ranch Mom and k_ranch needed a gentle horse for their kids. Even though I thought I'd probably never sell ol' Tomcat, I decided to let them try him with their kids. It was a perfect match, so I sold them the horse. He went to a good home, and can live out his last years still being a productive teacher.

We bought a similar older ranch horse for our kids when they were small. The best way for a kid to learn to be a cowboy, is to get experience from a horse that has experience.

When I was a young bride, Soapweed, I wanted to ride and help with the cattle. Mr. FH bought me a really good horse because I didn't know much about working cattle. He was a JB King bred gelding that I called Kelly.
The first time I rode him I thought he was too much horse for me, but Mr. FH said he was a good one and I was going to ride him. That horse taught me soooooo much. He knew to be in the right place at the right time. When that happens, soon it is fun to be along helping instead of just being along for the ride. We were working for the man who helped us get our start in the ranching business near Buffalo, Wyoming at the time. Kelly was 10 or 11 years old when we bought him and had been used quite a bit. As time passed, he got stove up and I told the man we worked for that I thought I was going to sell him. He said to me, "Oh, don't sell that horse. I'm just getting so I can quit riding over the hill to pull out my hair." :p

So you are right on about good old horses being a wonderful teacher.
That Kelly horse taught me sooooooooo much that I'm not sure I would have learned, had I not had him.

And we didn't sell him, had him til the end.
