Reminds me of a friend of mine who ended up with some cows from a guy who lived down the road from me after that guy died. Old Bill had been gone for years when Marty told me was getting rid of the last cows with Bills brand on them. I called BS, that there was no way he could still have those cows after all these years. I had a look and it was definetly Bills brand on Bill's cattle, and by doing the math those last old girls were 26 yrs young, looked fine (including their udders) , and were in calf.
And folks say simmental don't last.

Pleased to see somebody still has longevity in dairy cows. My Dad remembers milking cows older than himself when he left school - he left school at 17. The ones that lasted to that age were Dairy shorthorn x Ayrshire - maybe it was the hybrid vigor at work.

I think most dairy cows would last a long time if they only had to raise a calf once a year and maybe give the household a litre or two of milk a day.

What is the average lactations for a factory dairy cow-last I heard it was three or close to it. It's a pretty big feat for a cow to live to 22 let alone stay sound.

No, that was when they dairied on a small scale - hand milked 25 cows and made very good money at it.

Last I heard about 2.5 lactations - could be worse in the US with the BST crap they use.
