Checking on the cows.

Yes it is tough going but they have plenty of available grass up on the hills that were mostly bare before this last 5 inches. The fresh snow makes the slough grass more tasty. I was there to mechanically supply protein. They have a date with the trucks to come to the farm late next week for some scrumptious barley straw and residue. They will miss the trees. :(

what is the building in the background of the first two pics?

it doesn't look like you heated horse has much room to spare in the trailer, either side or on the top. :D

It is an old self feeder from long before my time. Just goes to show that they can graze if there is enough grass under there and do just fine. Just enough room to get out but I have to leave one door off. Not cold enough for 2 doors anyway.

Cows are looking fantastic Per. It's a shame the weather has been back to front - like us your winter grazing is just coming to an end as the weather is set to improve. Instead of -30C's they are talking 0 or even above for well through January.

Those cows sure look good. Foraging isn't hurting them any, that is for sure  . Wish we had grass like that for ours....

What are you using for protein supplement?

I have mine on canola meal and salt.
For the time left here they are getting rather pricey lick tubs from Feed Rite in Fort Macleod and salt blocks. When they get home they will be getting barley and straw bunches and free choice mineral and salt. Usually I mix the mineral in with the grain but I am going to try free choice for a while to see how it goes.

There is previous snow on the low lying areas but the south slopes and the tops were bare from warm west winds the week before. Their open compatriots averaged around 1175 so they are not necessarily shorties unless compared to some of those European race horses from the eighties.

If one of those old sister's was to loose her footing on a steep slope, she'd be the start of a giant snowball. Those cows are plumb ROUND! :D What's the protein content of Alberta snow? :???: Great pictures Per! It does sadden me and the stock trailer, to see it wasting away hauling 4 tired apparatus instead of four-footed ones like God intended! Just say no to warmth and comfort! Say yes to equine power and the cold joy it brings to your heart, ya wimp! :D
