Iraq Raid Yields Possible Chemical Production Facility
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13, 2005 – Acting on detainee-provided tips, coalition forces found what's believed to be an insurgent chemical production facility and chemical storage locations during Aug. 9 raids in northern Iraq, officials in Iraq reported today.

Technical experts are analyzing this chemical production equipment believed to be part of a clandestine operation. Officials state so far that evidence was insufficient on what was being produced at the facility found during a U.S.-led raid Aug. 9.

The early morning raids, conducted by Task Force Freedom, uncovered what technical experts believe to be a "clandestine chemical production facility" and possibly related storage sites.

Military officials are careful to state that ongoing analysis of the chemical evidence collected from the sites is currently insufficient to determine what the insurgents had been producing.

"We are continuing to investigate the production and storage facilities to determine what type and quantities of chemicals were produced at the facility and the specific threat posed to our forces," said Col. Henry Franke, Multinational Corps' nuclear, biological and chemical defense officer.

"We don't want to speculate on any possibilities until our analysis is complete," he added.

But military officials believe they've disrupted a potentially serious threat to coalition forces and the Iraqi people.

Intelligence experts are conducting related investigations to determine which terrorist or insurgent group is responsible for the construction and operation of the secret facility.

Well, Bush finally got his wish: a chemical weapons plant in Iraq (maybe). If he had listened to the professional soldiers and sent enough troops, these chemicals couldn't have been hidden or brought into the country. But, no, they wanted to do this war on the cheap and look what it's cost us at this point.

Didn't you know........................

But...but...I thought a handful of weapons inspectors that were being treated like ass-clowns were supposed to find everything?

Saddam gassed the Kurds, not the Sunnis or Shiites and he did it with training, information and probably supplies he got from the US government.

Except this plant wasn't up and running when the weapons inspectors were working. It's been built or renovated since Bush invaded Iraq. Another wonderful thing Bush has done for US troops.

Oh, Bush did this for the troops? How creative.

That's a pretty weak response, Cal. I'll be more specific. There were no chemical weapons plants in Iraq until George W. Bush chose to invade the country without enough troops. Now there is at least one potential chemical weapons plant, built right under our noses. I'm so grateful that they found this one and hope there aren't more actually being put to use in the rest of the country. Since George ignored the advice of professional soldiers and tried to do this war on the cheap, who knows what other threats our soldiers will be facing tomorrow.

Link below; my emphasis:

"Officials said the seized chemicals do not appear to be linked to Saddam Hussein's former government.

The U.S. invaded Iraq in March 2003 to destroy Saddam's purported weapons of mass destruction. No stockpiles were ever found.

U.S. arms investigators have said there was evidence that Iraqi insurgent groups had tried to manufacture chemical weapons, including one group that recruited a Baghdad chemist who tried and failed to make a nerve agent."
