BEIJING — A Chinese spacecraft carrying three astronauts docked manually with an orbiting module on Sunday, a first for the country as it strives to match American and Russian exploits in space.

The Shenzhou 9 capsule's maneuver with the Tiangong 1 module was shown live on national television. It follows a docking last week that was carried out by remote control from a ground base in China.

The Chinese astronauts have been living and working in the module for the past week as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station. They returned to the Shenzhou 9 capsule early Sunday and disconnected in preparation for the manual reconnection.

Wu Ping, spokeswoman for China's manned space program, told reporters in Beijing that hand levers were used to control Shenzhou 9 and position it to dock with the orbiting module. The maneuver was "precise and perfect" and the three astronauts carried it out "calmly and skillfully," Wu said.

"This success in manual docking represents a major breakthrough in our space rendezvous and docking technologies," Wu said.

China's next goals include another manned mission to the module later this year and replacing Tiangong 1, which was launched last year, with a permanent space station around 2020. Possible future missions could also include sending a man to the moon.

thanks to Obama we have no real manned space program..

USA May Exit Manned Spaceflight

Forty years after single-handedly landing the first men on the moon, the USA may be unable to deliver on plans to land men on Mars or the moon anytime soon.

Once NASA grounds the space shuttle fleet next year, the USA will no longer have the capability to send men into space without help from other countries. Current plans call for NASA to suspend its own manned space launches for six years

now, a so-called “Augustine Commission” is questioning the cost of the new system, and NASA-watchers are bracing for yet another delay in US plans to fly humans into deep space. The charge of the “Augustine Commission,” currently meeting with NASA engineers, is to conduct an independent review of America’s manned space efforts. Unless they develop solid plans and commitments to manned spaceflight, the final shuttle flights next year could mean the end of America’s lead in manned spaceflight.

The new economic restraints along with a change in America’s political will over the past 40 years suggest international and commercial coalitions may dictate man’s future in space, instead of NASA

I hope that is the "change" the liberals wanted... a giant leap backwards for science :?

The Committee judged the 9 year old Constellation program to be so behind schedule, underfunded and over budget that meeting any of its goals would not be possible. President Obama removed the program from the 2010 budget effectively canceling the program.

On April 15, 2010, President Obama spoke at the Kennedy Space Center announcing the administration's plans for NASA. None of the 3 plans outlined in the Committees final report were completely selected.[9] The President rejected immediate plans to return to the Moon on the premise that the current plan had become nonviable.

instead of a real space program we will continue to shuttle our jobs to china as that is about all Obama can manage now... :?

Bush inherited many problems from Clinton. Most are continuing today.

The China Trade Act of 2000 Summary The China Trade Act of 2000 was introduced in Congress to allow free trade with China as with other favored nations. Trade with communist countries was currently allowed only on a year-to-year basis under the Trade Act of 1974

and then there was the intellignece deaal, in regards to terrorism that allowed 911 to happen

Oh and .....

Former President Bill Clinton:
I think that the only thing that our administration did or didn't do that we should have done is to try to set in motion some more formal regulation of the derivatives market.
