China To Drill In Texas

HOUSTON — State-owned Chinese energy giant CNOOC is buying a multibillion-dollar stake in 600,000 acres of South Texas oil and gas fields, potentially testing the political waters for further expansion into U.S. energy reserves.
With the announcement Monday that it would pay up to $2.2 billion for a one-third stake in Chesapeake Energy assets, CNOOC lays claim to a share of properties that eventually could produce up to half a million barrels a day of oil equivalent.

It also might pick up some American know-how about tapping the hard-to-get deposits trapped in dense shale rock formations, analysts said.

As part of the deal, the largest purchase of an interest in U.S. energy assets by a Chinese company, CNOOC has agreed to pay about $1.1 billion for a chunk of Chesapeake’s assets in the Eagle Ford, a broad oil and gas formation that runs largely from southwest of San Antonio to the Mexican border.

CNOOC also will provide up to $1.1 billion more to cover drilling costs.

The deal represents China’s second try at making a big move into the U.S. oil and gas market, following a failed bid five years ago to buy California-based Unocal Corp.

Intense political opposition over energy security concerns derailed that $18.4 billion deal. But analysts expect few political or regulatory hurdles to the CNOOC-Chesapeake deal.

“The climate is much more hospitable now,” said Juli MacDonald-Wimbush, a partner with Marstel-Day, an energy and environmental security consulting company in Fredericksburg, Va.

Amid low natural gas prices and a largely difficult drilling climate, she said highly liquid Chinese companies will find willing partners among onshore oil and gas companies hurting for capital to drill.

Thank Rick Perry republican governor of Texas for this deal he just got back from China. Also thank him for furnishing enterprise money to a Chinese telecommunication company so they can move to Texas.

Do you have any evidence that Rick Perry was involved in this deal?

A company from Canada, Talisman, has also just recently announced a $1 Billion + deal in the Eagle Ford Acreage. Was Perry involved in that deal also?

Talisman Energy (TLM) and Statoil (STO) announced that they have entered into a joint venture agreement and acquired acreage in Texas that is prospective for the Eagle Ford Shale.

Federal regulators can step in if they so choose.

The Chesapeake agreement shows that China is confident that the purchase of a 33 percent stake in the Eagle Ford acreage in South Texas will get the backing of U.S. regulators and politicians, who stepped in five years ago to block CNOOC's effort to buy U.S. oil company Unocal.

Must have been the Global cooling that made the Texas climate more bearable.

China is not doing the drilling. They bought partial interest in a drilling endeavor.

They might be called the "Financiers" and could lose as well as gain.

Perry cannot stop this type deal.

No just speculation on my part. The governor took credit for the telecommunications deal. One fact is for sure he pushed for a Spanish company to take 600000 acres of ranch and farm land for a toll road for the Spanish company. This road would allow the importing of goods to come through Mexico and on to Canada.

the NAFTA superhighway? I thought DHS was on the look out for the "right wing radical extremists" that were spreading that Conspiracy theory?

I know OT has brought it up numerous times, and seemed like he was willing to go to war against it, but.....it's a proven Conspiracy theory, the MIAC report said so.

Titled “The Modern Militia Movement,” the report is dated Feb. 20 and designed to help police identify militia members or domestic terrorists. Red flags outlined in the document include political bumper stickers such as those for U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, talk of conspiracy theories such as the plan for a mega-highway from Canada to Mexico and possession of subversive literature.

So let me get this straight?

they dropped plans for a highway that was a "conspiracy theory", and DHS calls anybody that opposed the highway "extremists"?

Sounds to me like they really wanted this highway, enough so that they were willing to demonize a whole group of people with certain political views.

Demonize is maybe the wrong word. Maybe intimidate into silence might be better.

Don't be upset with China. Get upset at Cheasapeake and their CEO Aubrey McClendon. That SOB will do anything for a $.... Chesapeake throws money around like there is no tomorrow. I guess for the royalty owner it's good as they'll pay jsut about whatever it takes to get the lease because McClendon gets a cut of the production of EVERY well they drill.

The 600,000 acres is probably correct...farm land?? Hardly...The way the larger cities on I-35 are growing in 10 years they people along their will be begging for the corridor. Traffic is almost unbearable now.
