Chinook Today- Blizzard Tomorrow????

Beautiful day today- temp around 60, sunshine and light Chinook winds- spent the day cleaning out another pasture and hauling the partnership cows down and putting on my west hayfields...

BUT

tomorrow night they say there is an arctic front moving in which could take temps down into the single digits with 20-30 mph winds and snow- up to 4 to 6"....Not supposed to warm up until the weekend again...Good old prairie weather

I really wish this would hold off for a few more days- a lot of folks trying to gather and ship- most the grazing association cattle go off this week- and a lot of the BLM pastured cows---- and if we do get another blizzard it will just make more of a wreck for mixed up and lost cattle...The last one already has cows spread out everywhere..This pasture should have had 128 head- we found 118- but luckily only 1 orphan calf, as I expected more...Hard telling how far south the rest went...

Our weather forecast is similar, OT, without that much snow.

It has really been wet here, just now drying up. We want
to take our heifer calves to be fed this winter and we haven't
been able to get to the corral to load them. Tomorrow's the
day!!!!

Sounds like we had better trail our cows and Hfrs. home from town tomorrow. it's 10 miles but the cows know the way.

Might not be a bad idea- I know my buddy that runs north of me (the one I posted pics of helping gather bulls) is trailing his home this weekend- but he has closer to 25 miles and takes 2 days- but they know the way too...I hope he found some of mine in with his and are bringing them in...

Yikes... I always hate those blowing wind advisoiries and the furthests my cows get from me on this place is a mile... Those were always my long nights for calf checking and the like.. Doubt I will be getting many of those from April 10th on this year...

Good luck all with your weather, we have 8 days of dry in front of us, I hope to get all of my stalks but up for the winter during those 8 days. 80 acres a day would easily do the trick... 100 a day is a better goal.

Made it home okay, ot!!! Thanks only to your advice!! Amazing how quickly the weather around here can change....usually within a mile or two!! Was in Helena about 10 am and the sky was clear and it was about 55 degrees....drove 1/2 hour and the sky blackened and the temp dropped to about 30 by the time I got to Great Falls!!

Glad you made it safely ranchwife...My daughter was supposed to drive to Glendive today--work a shift at the VA Home-- and then drive home at midnite to work a shift here tomorrow...Happily, I convinced her to cancel out on the Glendive shift...That desolate south of the Missouri breaks is not a good place to travel anytime at night- let alone in the middle of a snowstorm...

Just starting to snow here-- wind has been picking up all afternoon and temps dropping...Wind is about 30 mph now and temp is down to 25...

Looks like our snow is done-- ended up with about 3-4" on the level--everything is white...Wind must have died down during the night as I haven't found much for drifts...

But it sure is wintery looking- and only 18 degrees which they predict will fall all day...

Now those Chinook winds need to come back.........

Hmm... 68 and sunny here today.. Now we are warm... Waiting for the last of the dew, yes ded, to dry off and than it is time t fire up the shreader and the baler as it is corn stalk time..lol.. I hate doing it but someone has to sit all day and listen to the radio.. Was going t work calves today instead but when ol' mother nature smiles down on you with a dry period, well, you better make hay while it is shining..

This was the boses brillant plan for feed.. Baling corns stalks and feeding distillers grain... Great, great idea.. Much more economical than buying hay or seed corn silage... (My plan would have been less cows/more hay ground but I loose as usual when it comes to him).. Probem is with a wet fall like we have had you arealy asking for trouble.. And we got it this year along with his buying the equipment and leting him do the shopping... Man likes big tractors, lol... Oh well, this too shall pass. 800 bales.. if we get the other field picked we will get it.. I hope.

He may just learn how well swath grazing works in your country... Same happened to me about 4 years ago, and I grazed those swaths well into January before the snow finally got too deep and crusted....

This is going to be one of those years I'm happy I have lots of hay- since the pastures were short because of drought- I'm already setting out a couple bales to some of the cows.....

Yesterday and the day before and the day before that were the 'perfect days.' Yesterday it was 68 degrees with a very gentle breeze. Felt
it cool off about 7 last night when the wind came up. This morning it is 22 with a skiff of snow and some wind. Very overcast.

The cat wanted to go out first thing this morning (he always wants to go out) so I opened the door for him.
He went out, stood there looking around for a moment and came back in. He loves it outside, but decided there'd be a better day!!!

Stay safe, everyone!

Yesterday, about 2:00, was 73 degrees, the temp dropped 25 degrees in 1-1/2 hrs. This morning was snowing, blowing, with about 3 inches on the ground. Tonight it is clear as a bell and -3. BRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
