Chris Christie signs 10 out of 15 gun laws

One bars gun purchases by people on the federal terrorism watch-list; the other makes it mandatory for the state to submit information on people who are banned from gun ownership to a national database.

Several of the remaining bills on Christie’s desk put the governor in a tight spot, politically.

One bill passed by the state Senate, S.2737, would institute background checks for all private gun sales and require all prospective gun owners to attend a gun safety training class.

Another would ban a model of .50 caliber rifle, the most powerful rifle available to civilians.

Christie has not tipped his hand as to whether he will sign or veto the other five bills, which include an outright ban on the sale of the highest caliber rifle currently available to civilians.

the Sweeney ‘kitchen sink’ bill that attacks gun rights and does nothing to prevent crime; a ban on $10,000 rifles used by wealthy hobbyists; and a bill that would mandate that the state police disclose law enforcement data in violation of federal law.”

"These common-sense measures will both strengthen New Jersey's already tough gun laws and upgrade penalties for those who commit gun crimes and violate gun trafficking laws," said Christie, who is expected to easily win reelection this year.

Gun control supporters in New Jersey said the signings represented a step forward.

A-3687: Prohibits people on the federal terror watch list from buying a gun
A-3717: Requires that New Jersey send certain mental-health records to the federal background check system
A-3788: Eliminates public’s right to access firearms records under the state’s Open Public Records Act
A-3796: Provides a 180-day amnesty period for people to turn in illegal weapons
S-1279: Increases penalty for transferring a firearm to an underage person
S-2430: Declares violence a public health crisis and establishes a “Study Commission on Violence”
S-2468: Allows police to impound vehicles used in gun trafficking
S-2719: Increases criminal penalties for gun trafficking
S-2720: Clarifies that the total number of firearms purchaser identification cards and permits to purchase a handgun in a municipality are public records
S-2804: Increases criminal penalties for unlawful weapons possession
Christie vetoed one bill in June:
A-3668: Prohibits the state from investing in companies that manufacture assault weapons for civilian use

These bills remain on Christie’s desk:

A-3659: Bans sales of .50-caliber firearms
A-3797: Requires firearms trafficking statistics be included in annual Uniform Crime Report
S-2715: Creates pamphlets telling parents how to limit their children’s exposure to media violence
S-2723: Democrats’ “centerpiece” bill, alters the way New Jersey issues ID cards for prospective gun buyers and requires buyers to complete a safety course – See more at: http://www.northjersey.com

But some conservatives contend that, of late, Christie has been much too inclined to burnish his moderate credentials.

Signing Thursday's gun bills was one example.

while the title of most seem like common sense,.. the devil is in the details..

The state Senate today passed 10 gun control measures. The bill passed by a mostly party-line vote of 23-17, with most Democrats in favor and all Republicans opposed. Only one Democrat, state Sen. Jeff Van Drew, from Cape May County, voted against it.

While he expresses admiration for Senate President Steve Sweeney’s efforts to balance both sides of the gun control debate, Van Drew asserted his belief in the Second Amendment.

“I think it dates back to the founding of this country and I believe that the folks who legally own guns are genuinely and honestly are good and gentle, law-abiding citizens that aren’t bothering anybody, he said”

New Jersey has the second toughest gun safety laws in the country, and Van Drew says the solution to gun violence is not more laws.

He added that a review of states with more gun regulations did not translate to less crime, and that any new laws would not affect criminal behavior.

“Those folks that would break the law, they’re not worried about permits, they’re not worried about registering, they’re not worried about doing the right thing,” Van Drew argued. “These laws will only affect those who are already doing the right thing, those who are already just sportsman or competitors or hunters or collectors.”

Van Drew says he believes that the majority of his constituents support his position. “I understand the goal of the folks that want more regulation is good but the reality is that the gang bangers and the law breakers aren’t worried whether it’s one gun a month, they’re not worried whether there is a different system for registering, they’re not going to register, they’re not getting their guns that way. They’re getting them illegally.”

Senate Bill 2552 – Sponsored by state Senator Jeff Van Drew (D-1), SB 2552 protects individual gun owner information from public disclosure.

Why is it that the title of a bill is all a liberal reads? and then decides we are irrational when we oppose the bill?

I wonder if Ann Coulter still supports old Lardass?

Like most conservatives she realized Christie is a liberal..

It sounds like she is over her crush on him,...

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter is going after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) after Christie's appointee to the U.S. Senate voted for the immigration bill.

Coulter tweeted Thursday that Christie is "dead to me"

I guess you can't get more over a person then that...

Glad she came to her senses. Her promotion of non-candidate Christie was getting a little gross during the last election.

well I voted today in the special primary election.. for the open senate seat.

turnout was exceptionally high.. at about 4pm.. I picked up my number..

usually by 8am to 9am when I normally vote it is in the mid twenties..

With all the districts covered by poll workers there was about 15 to 18 paid workers and no party challengers ...

at the time I went in it took me about a half hour to vote...

you might be thinking there was a line..

first I talked to a friends mother in law.. real nice lady..

then I talked to a neighbor.. and the lady she was with.. both nice retired ladies..

then I ran into a friend who I hadn't seen in a while.. it took a few minutes to get caught up... she is a lawyer and handles any legal voting issues..

they all were happy,.. a few were knitting.. one was playing solitaire on a laptop..

I was registered voter number 5 at 4 pm..

with numbers like that.. why can't we win an election?

With 40 percent of the vote in, Lonegan leads Eck 81 to 19 percent. Conservative activist Steve Lonegan scored an easy victory over political newcomer Alieta Eck in the Republican U.S. Senate primary tonight, the Associated Press projects.

Lonegan, the former mayor of Bogota, will now run against Newark Mayor Cory Booker in the Oct. 16 general election for the Senate seat vacated after Frank Lautenberg's death. He faces what is expected to be an uphill but heated battle with Booker, who won today's Democratic primary.

And why the heck did Christie waste all this money to hold a special election?

sure wish Lonegan was our Governor..

hopefully liberals will think it is in the bag and conservatives will turn out for a huge vote..

Steve Lonegon is the best republican I have seen lately in this state..

"We know what we believe, and when we go to Washington, D.C., we are going to do what we say,"

"We are the people who build our houses, who grow our food, who educate our children. We are the small businesspeople. We are, to put it simply, we the people."

"Our state of New Jersey has the best motto of any state in the country: Liberty and Propserity. Because without liberty you can have no prosperity," Lonegan continued. "That liberty today is under attack by an exploding national government that reaches deeper and further into every aspect of our lives every day."

Longtime Lonegan supporters, including local tea party leaders from across the state, took the stage as results trickled in and hailed their candidate as an anti-abortion, anti-tax conservative hero.

Though he faces much longer odds against Booker, Lonegan has promised to make the general election "a clear, line-in-the-sand, liberal vs. conservative race." His platform also includes repealing Obama's health care plan and ending the National Security Agency's surveillance of Americans' cell phone data.

"To the Hollywood elite that want to elect Cory Booker, the third U.S. Senator from California, you are nothing more than a rating point on the Nielsen rating," Lonegan said tonight. "But they've never been to New Jersey before. They don't know what a street fight is."

Logegan is the loud brash conservative Christie is trying to imitate..
sure he got the loud and brash right,.. even if it is a bit over the top,.. but he can't imitate Lonegon's conservative principles..

heck I doubt Christie knows what a principle is..

so far most of the conservatives I talked to down at the watering hole* are talking about either not voting for Christie or voting against him to kill his chances of running for president..

*actually it wasn't at a watering hole.. just out and around town over the last few weeks
