earlier in the week when they talked about the defense budget more than doubling since 2001 it pointed out another opportunity for savings.

maybe less spending but more effective. who was filling the void before 2001. wasn't a problem; the usa created its own financial crisis.

It started with the end of the Cold War. Most Muslim countries were "controlled" by Russia.

When they pulled back, and those countries were no longer influenced by Russia, there was a void, that the US filled.

Now, IF the US pulls out of those countries because of financial concerns, or whatever reason, the void will once again be filled.

China and Russia will most likely share the duties. And the whole cycle will repeat.

part of the problem with the defense budget is that Clinton slashed the Defense budget expecting a "peace" dividend off the Reagan era build up..

with the downsizing and shifting of the tasks to the reserve units, liberals expected "peace to break out" and solve all the worlds problems.. it didn't and we are now paying for the past misguided policies...

afghanistan is a prime example of bad military spending. nobody has conquered and controlled that country in centuries and nato certainly didn't have any more resources than russia. if america wants to fix its economy it will have to take a step back and look at where the money is going. iraq was bogus and afghanistan was foolish. its popular wisdom that military spending is stimulative but even beck's guests said it hurts the economy. what's more stupid tax and spend or borrow and spend?

neither. It's the spending part that has to be controlled. Tax and borrow are both the same thing. The Government is using someone elses money. And both taxpayers and lenders are seeing that the government is not spending their money wisely. In both cases, both the lenders and the taxpayers are getting upset with the spending on controlling the financial/economic markets. Likewise, both don't seem to mind the spending on Military spending.

It's about priorities.

Do you want trillions going to bailout banks, or a strong military that will provide protection and control.

Do you want billions going to special interest groups or going towards creating jobs.

A strong economy is #1, everything else comes from there.

both the lenders and taxpayers are sending signals, is the Government listening?

Maybe we need to quit protecting half the damn world and let every country fend for themselves. That would certainly allow us to cut our military budget.

As we pull out, we make it clear that if anyone messes us we wipe them off the face of the earth, and not stick around to clean it up.
