'It's up to you now': Sheehan quits By ANGELA K. BROWN, Associated Press Writer
23 minutes ago

FORT WORTH, Texas - Cindy Sheehan, the soldier's mother who galvanized an anti-war movement with her monthlong protest outside President Bush's ranch, says she's done being the public face of the movement.

"I've been wondering why I'm killing myself and wondering why the Democrats caved in to George Bush," Sheehan told The Associated Press by phone Tuesday while driving from her property in Crawford to the airport, where she planned to return to her native California.

"I'm going home for awhile to try and be normal," she said.

In what she described as a "resignation letter," Sheehan wrote in her online diary on the "Daily Kos" blog: "Good-bye America ... you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can't make you be that country unless you want it.

"It's up to you now."

Sheehan began a grass roots peace movement in August 2005 when she set up camp outside the Bush ranch for 26 days, asking to talk with the President about the death of her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan. Casey Sheehan was 24 when he was killed in an ambush in Baghdad.

Cindy Sheehan started her protest small, but it quickly drew national attention. Over the following two years, she drew huge crowds as she spoke at protest events, but she also drew a great deal of criticism.

"I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called "Face" of the American anti-war movement," Sheehan wrote in the diary.

On Memorial Day, she came to some "heartbreaking conclusions," she wrote.

When she had first taken on Bush, Sheehan was a darling of the liberal left. "However, when I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the 'left' started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used," she wrote.

"I guess no one paid attention to me when I said that the issue of peace and people dying for no reason is not a matter of 'right or left', but 'right and wrong,'" the diary says.

Sheehan criticized "blind party loyalty" as a danger, no matter which side it involved, and said the current two-party system is "corrupt" and "rapidly descending into with nary a check or balance: a fascist corporate wasteland."

Sheehan said she had sacrificed a 29-year marriage and endured threats to put all her energy into stopping the war. What she found, she wrote, was a movement "that often puts personal egos above peace and human life."

But she said the most devastating conclusion she had reached "was that Casey did indeed die for nothing ... killed by his own country which is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think".

"Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives," she wrote. It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years and Casey paid the price for that allegiance. I failed my boy and that hurts the most."

"I am going to take whatever I have left and go home," Sheehan wrote.

"Camp Casey has served its purpose. It's for sale. Anyone want to buy five beautiful acres in Crawford, Texas?"

She woke up, looked in the mirror and realized she looked like Henry Winkler , only uglier and decided her face shouldn't be the "face" of any movement.

It's sad to see so many people happy to see someone give up on what they think is their right, in her case protest.

She loves her son and felt his death unjustified in her eyes...this is how I'd say she felt she could express that.

This was her right to free speech. Don't gloat...this situation could come home to any of us with folks " over there".

She spit on her son's grave. She was nothing more than a publicity
seeker.

She wore out her freedom of speech. And we have freedom not to
have to hear.

Good bye and good riddance, I say.

Come on.....when did you see her do that???? Show me the photo??

You don't know where she spit anymore than I do....but I'd lay good money it was nowhere near her son's grave.

What are you smoking?

That didn't stop her from receiving aid and comfort from the enemy, aka Hugo Chavez. I'd imagine her son Casey, who VOLUNTEERED for service, is resting a little easier now.

Figure of speech, kola. It was merely a figure of speech, meaning
she did not respect her son or what he did fighting for our country.
She used HIM to advance her own agenda.

Do you get it now, or do I need to explain further?

PMSing today there FH??? Why be such a drama queen then with stupid statements like that??

I admit I didn't think much of her way of going about protesting BUT it took no money from my pocket or Hugo's either.

Yes her son was a volunteer, but I'm sure he didn't intend to fight and die for GW's revenge on Saddam.

The woman offered nothing constructive for American, she only hurt it. So I am glad she is done and gone. She broke the law and showed no respect for authority when protesting. She hung a blemish over the memory of her son.

And most of all she most likely caused more soldiers to die. She was a highly public protester that I guarantee you people like Bin Laden know who she is. She showed the terrorist that if they make more soldiers bleed and die that America's moms would rise up in protest.

She strengthened the resolve of the enemy and that cost American lives!!!!

Not to mention she appeared to be spineless, weak pathetic excuse of a woman that mirrored her political opinions. I would have respected her more if she did not come across so weak.

I wonder what she will do for a living now? Probably nothing and spend all her free time on message boards being a pain in the ass like kola.

Was she not arrested several times? YES!!!!!!!!
If arrested would that be becaues she was breaking the law? YES
How does anyone who preaches the downfall of the goverment not lead to the deaths of more people?
I agree she was not spineless just ill advised by her handlers! Those that gave her the financial aid to do what they bid her to do in their quest to discredit the USA to the world, especially the president.
ANOTHER WAY TO BASH BUSH!

Incidently i am not a big Bush fan, but i am a very big fan of the USA and for what it stands for.

She broke the law numerous times in her protesting, surely you know this?

I thought I explained in my comment how her actions would result in more deaths of soldiers? She strengthened the enemies resolve to fight. She was the poster child for Americans not having the stomach to continue the fight, Bin Laden and other members of Al Qaeda have more than once stated that Americans do not have the stomach for war, and Cindy fueled there statements.

Not sure if you ever played sports, but when you feel the other person is beat then you gain this extra strength to carry on til they break. That is what people like this woman do.

As for spineless that is probably the wrong word to use, I was trying to describe her demeanor, her soft spoken, whiny and weak demeanor she had. Even though I do not think she did anything courageous either, it does not take a strong person to speak out in a country were you are not punished for it. But I was talking about the way she carried herself in the press not the fights she fought.
