Tam and I brought in a hfr and helped her sometime around 3:30 and I went back out at 6 to check. As i walked by the pen with the hfr and new calf I heard the hfr choking. I grabbed my Hook doctor and tried it but no help, she went down so I ran a pitch fork handle down her throat, no help so I used the Hook Doctor again and reached down her throat but couldn't find anything. Finally I bounced on her rib cage a few times and she seemed to cough and started to get her breath. I slapped her and got her up walked her around a bit and put her back in with her calf. I also took the rest of the after birth out of the pen. Then I proceeded to bring in 2 more hfrs to the barn. When we started the corrals were pretty dry but all this beautiful rain has them kinda sloppy so it's nice to get them out of it before they his the ground. I think we have 25 out of 75 left to calve. :D

Note to self, if choking on something make sure BMR is in earshot. Good work, it is always good to save one once in a while. :)

Good thing you were there BMR.
I haven't had them choke on after birth, but did have a close call a few years ago where a heifer was choking on the sac that covers the calf when they are born. Luckily there was enough left in her mouth that I could reach in and pull it out.

Debbie found one in that shape a few years back. Jammed a stick crossways in the cows jaws and reached in past her elbow to pull it out. She said it was unreal how strong the suction was.

Took some antibiotics and two weeks to heal the infection she got from the toothmarks on her arm.
