Cold Calving...but not CANADIAN COLD!

The 60 degree weather has been replaced with teens and a wicked cold wind today :? . Last night it snowed a couple of inches, most of the moisture went north of here.

Heavy cows hang-out this afternoon :D .

I can't let them calve outside in the lot today. These two actually did calve outside, and I had to bring them in with my trusty calf sled and four wheeler  .

Yep-- those little black calves are looking good....Only -15 here this morning, but have wind and a winchill of -25...I don't have a big enough barn to barn them all- but have the heifers lotted next to the barn, so I can put them in as they start coming...Sorted off the heavy cows and have them in another lot- altho they aren't due for a few more days...

Makes for a long day- been checking them every hour or so- hoping to catch them when there is just feet showing so I can get them in the barn..Luckily my son is around and has been doing the after midnite watch- and Grandma sneaks out early in the morning before she goes to work and lets me sit in my longjohns and have another cup of coffee...

This morning as I was feeding I was watching the calves already born bouncing and bucking around in the 25 Below wind chill- and trying to keep from running over them- I was thinking how Tuff those little angus are if they just get the chance to get up and get their bellies full...I just came in from checking- and see several tho gave up the frolicking in the cold wind and snow- and are curled up in the straw in the calf shelters- wishing the sun would come out..

Temp only got to 0 for a high today- and the wind has quite a bite....There is hope tho- Weather boys predicting 20 Below for tonight-BUT near 20 ABOVE tomorrow- near 30 on Thursday- and 40's on Friday and the weekend...

I thought the Kubota thing was a strage coincidence, but you've got the same Hyquail (sp) panels as well :???: :) . Our heifers are all but done and the old cows are really fixing to cut loose, but just off to a slow start, thank goodness.

The calves look great. Keep posting as I detected some cows bagging up and those healthy cute little calves help with the enthusiasm index.

Those calves are looking good. They sure grow fast don't they. We're busy around here today. Been talking real nice to the girls about holding out for just a couple more days. But 4 just couldn't wait any longer. The barn is full, now we are having to rotate them outside. Not supposed to get quite this cold anymore :? . -30 for tonight or so they say, hope the girls can hold of just a bit longer.

Thanks for the compliments :D .

The heifer's calves are out of Weaver Angus bulls we bought last spring. Here an old post featuring them from last spring, and a link to their sire's pedigree.

Weavers are great people, and have very functional cattle. We've bought around 80 females from them over the years, and they have been nice cows...the ones you really notice in the herd. I've crossed them on Flying Y Balancer bulls, and have gotten good daughters. I feel it's the combination from both cattle sources which have made for good calves. I think the Balancers have given the calves a little extra thickness, without looking too Gelbvieh. Most people think these are straight Angus calves, and they aren't...there's a good percentage Gelbvieh in them  .

I'll post pics of our new Weaver bulls we bought last month. We bought another half brother to the heifer bulls from last year to go on our yearling Balancer heifers we plan to breed. I'm pretty confident it will work since the heifers this year calved easily... only have pulled one elbow lock so far, with five left to calve. I know next year Weavers will have some Mytty in Focus sons for sale :D . I need to find another high elevation Balancer source since Flying Y has gone to strictly commercial which is a shame since you couldn't go wrong with ANY of their bulls.

Those calves are sure looking good, mamas must be milking and the feeder must be feeding. :D

I am so glad we aren't calving in this stretch of weather, last 2 mornings have been -42. Supposed to warm up and snow on Friday. Good old March, maybe it will go out like a lamb. :D

Well at least you're not lambing also gcreek.

Not yet. They start April 20.

Not sure but I think Jodywy and I are the only ones on here that support the cow habit with lamb cheques. :D

I tried your link, but when I got to Angus Association I need their name or ID number. I'd be much obliged if you would provide it.

We bought 3 Mytty IN Focus sons to breed our yearling heifers to
this spring.

Oh yes, but the feeding is going to be minimized soon :D ... the water is coming in the next pasture, and I plan to move them as soon as the weather breaks. I've been feeding them around 20 pounds of alfalfa/grass, but where they're heading, I should be able to feed less hay since they should have good grass...unless it gets covered up :D .

42 below huh, and you're looking forward to a warm up with snow? I don't even want to know how that feels!!! And I'm concerned over 19 degrees F with a windchill tonight... I'll NEVER complain about the cold again  . Supposed to be back in the 50's by early next week.

And Cal, that is a coincidence. Those Hiqual panels are great, we have the maternity pen as well. Even though the headcatch stinks without a cheater bar, overall it's a good set-up :D .
