Taliban kill couple in public stoning
The Telegraph ^ | 8/16/2010

A man and woman have been stoned to death in northern Afghanistan after being accused by the Taliban of having an affair.

The 23-year-old woman and 28-year-old man were killed because "they had an affair," said Mohammad Ayob, the governor of Imam Sahib district in Kunduz province.

"Two people were stoned to death by Taliban in Mullah Quli village late yesterday," he said. The village is under the control of the Taliban.

Mullah Quli resident Abdul Satar said about 100 people, most of them Taliban insurgents, gathered in the village on Sunday evening as a statement was read out saying the pair had confessed to their affair.

He said the man was married to someone else, and the woman was engaged.

"The Taliban convicted both to stoning to death, some from the crowd started throwing stones at the couple until they died," Mr Satar said.

The couple had their hands bound behind their backs and were forced to stand in an empty field as their sentence was carried out, he said.

A local Taliban commander, who contacted media but refused to give his name, confirmed the killings.

"The couple confessed they had eloped together and based on their confession they were stoned to death," he said.

Under Islamic Sharia law, sex between unmarried people is punishable by public beatings, while punishment for those caught in extra-marital affairs is death by stoning.

'Honor' killing comes to the US

NO ONE knows just how many Muslim girls and women are murdered each year in the name of family "honor," since their deaths frequently go unreported and unpunished. The cases that do come to light are ghastly. "Women and young girls are set ablaze, strangled, shot at, clubbed, stabbed, tortured, axed, or stoned to death," "Their bodies are found mutilated with their throat slit, or they are chopped into pieces and thrown in a ditch."

The report singled out as especially horrifying the honor killing in Pakistan of "a 16-year-old girl who was reportedly electrocuted to death after being drugged with sleeping pills and being tied to a wooden bed with iron chains." Her offense: marrying a boy from the wrong community. Countless others have lost their lives for refusing an arranged marriage, wearing Western-style clothing, having a boyfriend, or even being raped.

In the Atlanta suburb of Jonesboro last month, a Pakistani immigrant allegedly strangled his 25-year-old daughter with a bungee cord because she was determined to end her arranged marriage and had gotten involved with a new man. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Sandeela Kanwal's father, Chaudhry Rashid, "told police he is Muslim and that extramarital affairs and divorce are against his religion [and] that's why he killed her." In court last week, a detective quoted Rashid: "God will protect me. God is watching me. I strangled my daughter."

In Upstate New York a few weeks earlier, Waheed Allah Mohammad, an immigrant from Afghanistan, was charged with attempted murder after repeatedly stabbing his 19-year-old sister. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported that Mohammad was "infuriated because his younger sister was going to clubs, wearing immodest clothing, and planning to leave her family for a new life in New York City" - she was a "bad Muslim girl," he told sheriff's investigators.

On New Year's Day in Irving, Texas, the bullet-riddled bodies of the Said sisters - Sarah, 17, and Amina, 18 - were found in an abandoned taxi. Police issued an arrest warrant for their father, an Egyptian immigrant named Yaser Abdel Said, who had reportedly threatened to kill them upon learning that they had boyfriends. According to the Dallas Morning News, Yaser Said was given to "gun-waving rants about how Western culture was corrupting the chastity of his daughters."

words cannot describe the disgust I have with people who raise pride above spirituality in religion, and then lash out at others in violent ways..

I remember having this conversation with R2 once. she denied thatthere were honor killings going on in Canada and the US.

They are happening and they wil increase in numbers. Just wait until sharia law comes into play more, like it is in some European Countries. What's next? Allowing them to marry girls that are 9, in the name of "freedom of religion"

The truth about honor killings

Canada is on the verge of adding honor killings to its federal criminal code, affirming the practice of murdering girls and women who supposedly bring dishonor to a family as "barbaric cultural practices" and "heinous abuses." Besides making honor killings a unique criminal charge,

The government's action seems to be prompted by a new report from the Frontier Centre for Public Policy. Released this past weekend, the report found that honor killings in Canada's immigrant communities are on the rise.

Hardly limited to Canada's border, honor killings have also made their way into the United States. Marie Claire recently published an extensive feature on the practice, numbering the women that have been murdered for ostensibly shaming their families in just the last few years.

There were the two teen sisters in Texas shot by their father, apparently because they had boyfriends.

A 19-year-old in Illinois killed by her husband after an argument about her Western-style clothing.

A 20-year-old in Phoenix who was run over by her father in a parking lot while walking with her boyfriend's mother.

A 25-year-old woman in Georgia strangled by her father for wanting out of an arranged marriage.

A 37-year-old in Buffalo, New York beheaded by her husband for wanting a divorce.

Typically chalked up to "standard" domestic violence or to cultural relativity, there has been little attention on these crimes as emerging from a unique practice, which, according to the Canadian report, is the key to effectively addressing them. These killings carry patterns that are unique from Western-style domestic violence -- such as the approval of the surrounding culture and families.

Reauthorization needs to happen. But the U.S. would do well to also follow Canada's model of particularizing honor killings as a crime. Currently, the federal Office on Violence Against Women has no unique listing for honor killings, nor do honor killings seem to be embedded in other listings. (A search on the site for "honor killings" produces zero results.) A Spring 2009 issue of Middle East Quarterly points out that the U.S. is also lagging behind Europe in responding to honor killings for what they are; that lack of acknowledgment means that the U.S. doesn't have the special programs or training that could save the lives of girls and women who are under threat. While even the United Nations General Assembly was finally persuaded in 2005 to look at the specifics of honor killings, and while cases of honor killings within our borders are apparent, the U.S. has not followed suit. This is insensible, especially when international models already exist for how to integrate attention to honor killings with a broad strategy for eliminating violence against women and girls. Like Canada, it's time to step up. After all, it's not just our honor that's at stake.

Didn't I see a story on Michigan high school football teams practicing at night in an effort to work around issues related to observing Ramadan?

Yeah, it can happen in the US or anywhere else.

Yup, found this article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/highschool/news/story?id=5467167

A Michigan high school football team is holding preseason practices in the middle of the night to help its Muslim players practice both faith and football.

The predominantly Muslim squad from Dearborn says the nocturnal regimen is a way for players to eat and drink while observing the holy month of daytime fasting known as Ramadan that started last week.

The August heat also played a factor in Fordson High coach Fouad Zaban's proposal to reverse the clock for a week of two-a-day practices.
