common core math

this letter is circulating around the internet.

A number line looks to me like counting on your fingers,.. only you get to write it down..

at least now we know why the US is failing in math and science..

Scores in math, reading and science posted by 15-year-olds in the United States were flat while their counterparts elsewhere — particularly in Shanghai, Singapore and other Asian provinces or countries — soared, according to the results of a well-regarded international exam released Tuesday.

While U.S. teenagers were average in reading and science, their scores were below average in math, compared to 64 other countries and economies that participated in the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA.

it really isn't hard to solve..

but the extra handwriting on the number line makes it look more difficult.. (or confusing)

add in it works from right to left.. and it looks even more foreign for US that were never taught a number line. (actually if I had counted on my fingers in school or used a number line, I probably would have been hit with a ruler.. )

Jack's problem appears to be forgetting to subtract the ten.. in 316

427 -- 327 -- 227-- 127 -(300) or 3 steps (or 3 fingers)

then switch to toes for the part jack missed.

127 -- 117 -(10) or one step (or 1 toes)

then back to fingers..

117 -- 116-- 115-- 114-- 113-- 112 -- 111 -( 6 ) or 6 steps (or 6 fingers)

they could complicate it more by subtracting the 5 from the 6 before or after the ones.

but then Jack would have to take off his other shoe..

anyone lost yet?

and did anyone see the "liberal"

way of not saying Jack did it wrong..

Jack used the number line to solve 427 - 316. find his error.
Then write a letter to Jack telling him what he did right, and what he should do to fix his mistake.

Dear Jack.. you did the hundreds right, and nailed the onesys,.. next time take off your shoe and do the ten.. and you won't look as stupid as you do today.

tell him what he did right.. really are our kids that fragile they can't criticize an imaginary Jack?

Me. :? :???:

What a ridiculous way to solve a simple subtraction problem. :dunce:

I feel sorry for the kids. And I feel even more sorry for the dumbing down of our country.

It's easy..

sure it gets confusing if you just use your fingers.. but not if you use number lines..

here is a few lines to help you "visualize" the how it works..

subtraction_on_a_number_line_0.png

Here is 46 - 27 =
to help you think about it..
you have 46 steers,.. and you sell 27 of them. How many do you have left..

well first you keep 3,

and then you keep 10,

and then you keep 6, then just put them all together in the pen and count them...
number-line5.png

lets see.. count to three.. and a ten,.. and count six more.. let see

1, 2 ,3 and ten is 13,.. and then 13, 14, 15, 16, 17,.. darn I lost count.. give me a second while I make a adding number line and write this down,..

ok got it.. 19
if you have trouble you can print out a number line from the internet to help .. but I just made my own with a pen and a piece of paper

then once you figure out how to use both fingers and toes.. they mix it up a bit...

them crazy ol liberals.. sure can make math fun....

And the above is why I always tell new parents - including my own children - that breakfast time is a time to sit down and have a chat about numbers. Make it fun and put the times tables and the division tables on the fridge door.

By the time my kids were 7 or 8 years old they knew the times tables to 12 and they could do division in their heads as well.

Parents - you must protect your kids from teachers - most of whom actually believe in this stuff.

The perfect test - walking down the hallway with a teacher on a parent teacher visiting day. I stopped about three or four students and asked them this question - and in fact I still do it - it is my litmus test of how well the system works.

What is 6x8 divided by 12

It is a rare day that they can do it in under 3 minutes without a calculator. Usually they get it wrong.

My kids could do that in their heads before they graduated from grade two. They were not special or smart or gifted - they were simply taught that some types of learning required memorization. And what they memorized helped them to understand more complex ideas.

Teach your kids stuff at home - make it structured. Not home schooling - even though I do believe in it - I am talking about additional stuff - which will repair the damage your public school is doing to your kids and it will actually allow them to think critically about issues and your extra work will help them solve problems in math and even help them to learn to enjoy history and geography and more.

Protect them from idiots at school boards and even better - protect them from well educated teachers who know more than you do about teaching - and are not afraid to tell you so!!

Ask your kids who some of the presidents were, ask them where a few major countries are, ask them if they know what H2O is.

For that matter ask them to locate - on a blank map of your country - Utah, Washington DC and Chicago and perhaps a couple other cities. Ask them where the St.Lawrence River is and ask them to name three of the 5 Great Lakes. - Ask them if the Grand Canyon is is Canada or the US of A.

And best of all teach them to read and enjoy reading - even if you are shitty at it and hate it - read to them every day until they can read for themselves and then get them the classics to read. Keep them out of the romance section and put them in the adventure section - Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels and more - these books will not only open their eyes to some old ways - they will see an entire new world.

No matter how you might like that teacher on a personal basis - the entire trade has failed the North American continent and the dumbing down of our kids is well under way. How I despise the trade as a whole after what it has done to this latest generation.

And we let it happen!!

Some day your kids will actually need to know how to do simple math - without a calculator.

If you do ALL of the above - and you encourage your kids to do the same with their kids - I can 100% guarantee you that those kids will be ALL smarter, more articulate and far more interesting to be around than any that come from the school system - which passes all students because failing is NOT allowed.

College grads with a degree and yet they cannot read, write, spell or even do a simple math equation like 6x8 divided by 12 in their head. How can that be??

We are the last generation that has actually pretty much met a standard across the continent - everyone pretty much knows all of the things I have mentioned - how could our children not?

And when you need someone to read the fine print dose on the LA200 bottle that kid will be able to actually read AND pronounce those long fancy words! LOL

Rant off

Best to all

Good thoughts, Broke Cowboy. My grandmother was born in 1897, and was a teacher before she got married. She even thought there was inadequacy in the teaching of the 1950's and 1960's when her grandkids (including me) were in school, compared to the methods that she had used in years previous. Since we would stay at her house in town during snowstorms, and in the afternoons until our parents had time to come pick us up from out in the country, she would continue our education every chance she got. She believed in phonics, flashcards for math, and lots of reading. We benefited greatly from her caring and influence. :)

I don't have a problem with doing such things, as math, differently, but it has to be efficient...hopefully more efficient than the "old way"

I quite often do math left to right, instead of the traditional right to left, but this equation is done even differently than that...and I knew the basics before I tried an "unconventional" method, as a challenge to myself.

If I was a cynic...I would be thinking that it is being done in this manner to create a dependency on teachers.

parents can't be as likely to help with homework, if it is taught differently than they are accustomed to.

Parents can teach how to calculate the correct answer, but not necessarily teach the method, which the child will be graded on, so it creates a dependency on government schooling, versus homeschooling.

But I'm not a cynic...

So, then, common core math is kind of like using an abacus.

I had struggled with a way to explain it.. but that would be close to how it works..

The abacus (plural abaci or abacuses), also called a counting frame, is a calculating tool that was in use centuries before the adoption of the written modern numeral system.

I could see using it in the early grades....

a comically ironic note of all this .. we as conservatives are accused of wanting to put US back in the 1950's..

but the liberals want to force US back into the fifth century.. ... :?

Steve....the liberals want to force us back to the time of the prophet Mohammed. The libs don't want us screwing with a damned abacus, they want men screwing other men, beating and stoning women, beheading infidels, and having an occasional dalliance with farm animals. All in the name of Allah.

Allahu Akbhar!
