Darrell Issa: Contempt vote coming on Fast and Furious
Politico | 19 June 2012 | JOHN BRESNAHAN and JAKE SHERMAN

House Republicans are charging head first into their most direct conflict with President Barack Obama’s administration over the extent of executive branch power, as they prepare to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress on Wednesday.

Holder and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) failed to reach an agreement on what documents the administration would fork over to help Republicans investigate the Fast and Furious program, a joint Justice Department-Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives operation that put guns into the hands of Mexican cartels.

The two sides remained at loggerheads Tuesday evening, after a 20-minute huddle in Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s third-floor Capitol suite. Holder later called Issa’s position “political gamesmanship” and not a true attempt to resolve the dispute.

After the session, Issa, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said no deal was in hand and Wednesday’s vote would move forward, barring a last-minute reversal.

The contempt fight with Holder and the White House is a big moment for House Republicans. With stubbornly high unemployment, a president with weak approval ratings, a redistricting process that has shored up Republican seats from coast to coast and a worse-than-expected economic recovery, GOP officials think they’re poised to keep the House in their control, and many believe they have a shot at taking the Senate and White House.

This is going to be very interesting. Hasn't Holder had enough time
to destroy documents? What would keep him from doing so?
I don't trust him at all. Issa is on tv right now talking to Greta
on Fox News and he acts sad about the whole thing. He said they
are between a rock and a hard spot but they have to go forward.
Why would he act so apologetic????????

Issa said AG met with us with an offer "not in good faith"
and hasn't produced any additional documents. About time
this comes to a head. Actually past time.

Boehner & his crew seem afraid of them for some reason. Not much leadership on either side up there now if you ask me..............

:agree: But I'm not one bit happy about it. Easy to see why
Obama has gotten away with so much. Every time a get a call from
a Republican asking questions, or wanting money, I tell them that
those Rep in Congresss need to get tough and get something done.

At least Issa is seeing this through.

They said on tv that if they file contempt charges, Holder won't
co-operate with them. Well, DUH, what have they got to lose?
He isn't co-operating now and hasn't since F&F was brought to light.

Breuer Says He Knew About Gun ‘'Walking,’ But Failed to Inform Others

November 1, 2012

The Justice Department released documents Thursday on the Bush-era Wide Receiver gun-walking operation that suggest the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was aware that guns were likely flowing into Mexico but allowed it to continue in the hopes of penetrating deeply into U.S.-Mexico gun trafficking networks.

DOJ’s documents were delivered in response to House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa’s subpoena on Operation Fast and Furious and were also made available to the press.

An August 2006 briefing memo on Wide Receiver, which was conducted from 2006 to 2007, shows that “there is currently sufficient documentation to conclude” a criminal case from the investigation.

In addition, the memo suggests that it was “highly unlikely,” due to the limited recovery of firearms, that weapons had not already entered gun trafficking conduits to Mexico.

Regardless, ATF decided to forge ahead with the investigation. Additional documents indicate that they did so in an attempt to infiltrate deeper into criminal gun trafficking organizations operating along the U.S.-Mexico border.

By the end of 2006, the targets of the investigation had purchased 181 firearms. Hundreds of firearms were sold to the targets of the investigation before it ended in 2007.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visits Mexico, says U.S. to blame for drug wars

"It's not only guns, it's night-vision goggles, it's body armor," Clinton said enroute to Mexico City in her third foreign trip as Secretary of State.

"And since we know that the vast majority, 90% of that [weaponry] comes from our country, we're going to try to stop it from getting there in the first place," Clinton said.
