my son worked on a project for an un-named election machine manufacture in college .

the objective was basically to see how secure the election machines are to both physical and cyber tampering.

the physical was easy, after recent bad press over the keys being easy to get.. they made the key harder to get and copy.

the companys' felt the secured to lock technology by not allowing the key blanks to be purchased..

a simple chain of custody and a computerized program similar to vehicle vins would allow the company to make keys for authorized users from the model and serial numbers..

with out a blank.. the process was secure..

the "hack" group simply downloaded pictures of the key used a CAD and 3 dimension program to -reconstruct the key.. within a day they had a bunch of blanks made from other key blanks bough at a hardware store.

the key vin program was easy to hack and simulate.. soon with the help of a kid at a dealership... they had plenty of keys for the test machines..

hacking the onsite machine was incredible easy according to my son..

and hacking it over the states and companies secure networks took a bit of time. alot of code writing.. but it was done within the week..

in total the project had three two hour classes and two lab hours..

add in a little out of class collaboration.. in 8 to 12 class hours.. the small "team" from a university hacked the "secure" machines..

did the companies learn from this .. or just take down the picture of the keys?

I asked my son about it.. he just shook his head.. and laughed..

I believe they have gotten better at securing the machines.. and worse at securing the information... which can easily be manipulated.
