Couple of fire pix

This is where the big one, jumped hiway 34. It goes for about 12 miles on south of here and about 5 miles north, looking the other way. They are calling it 30,000 acres, but the locals think that is pretty conservative.

This next one shows the old missle site that John wrote about, that was saved by the sheep they had grazing it down.

Here's a patch of grass and some tree's that Jingles Jr helped to save. Too bad they couldn't have saved more, but he said you couldn't even see, in all of the smoke! They were damn lucky to get it stopped when and where they did!

At this point, they had been trying to stop traffic, up the road, but several motorcylists just had to go on thru' to get to the rally on time. They sure made it bad for a few who were trying to get this fire out, when they came barreling thru' the smoke. Idiots!

Well there might be a few less motor cyclist next year, from what I hear, they are killin each other off up there.

Not nearly enough or quick enough!

The rally costs our county from $150,000 to $200,000 a year, that we have to make up for in tax dollars! The rally, oh yeah, it's just freakin' great!

Why does it cost your county that much? I can see where you'd need extra law enforcement. But with all the money spent up there durin the rally, looks like some of that would more'n cover the county's costs......if not, someone aint doin it right.

Killing? What's that about? I never heard about any killing.
Fill me in please.

JB, that's too bad that nice country burned up. Hopefully, it still
will catch a rain. Hate to lose any trees tho. Takes them a long time
to come back.

I ain't real sure, but we have to provied a lot of extra law enforcement. a town of 8000 goes to 100,000 for about a week and a half. And even with the charges against the law breakers, they still don't make enough to cover the cost.

If they could charge every motorcycle that comes into the county a flat fee, then maybe it would work.

I don't understand it, but I damn sure don't like having to pay for someone elses fun!

Don't get me wrong, by and large most of the people who come are good folks, Just too damn many in too small of an area. and they bring their bad driving habits with them.

How'd you like it if 100,000 preachers, cowboys, insurance salesmen or any other group of people, all camped in your back yard or pasture for a week and a half?

So I've heard, (not on the news) but from one's that have been to Sturgis last year, this year they are having trouble with Hells Angels and I think they said the Banditos. Killin each other on the shuttle buses and stuff.

Somebody bumped somebody on "Da Bus", someone took a knife to the other.

Then some gang shot up a campground, trying to get some of another gang. 5 shot but I don't think any died.

No big deal. typical tourist stuff.

Yup, all this country needs is some rain and a better class of people. About the same thing they say about hell, I guess.

Thanks for the pics from the fire, JB! They are good but just can't capture the magnitude of the whole thing on camera.

I set out the fire coming through in the pickup on the asphalt in front of the gate going into that missle site and watched those sheep come around and bunch up in the SE corner of the LCF building. Sheep are sometimes smarter than we give them credit for! :D :D :D I talked to the owner of the sheep later and he was glad they weren't turned loose. Nobody knows where they could have ended up but it probably wouldn't be good.

I agree on the extra law and court costs our county incurs. One thing I don't believe mentioned is out of state bikers who leave the local hospital stuck with bills for treating them. Not sure if the county ends up picking up the tab for that or not. One way or another, county residents and paying hospital patients will make up the difference.

We have a 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms for this evening.
Kinda scary. Be interesting to see what develops. We haven't had
60% all summer.

Been some big ol' black clouds come off from them, from the wind.

And it's hard to arrest a tresspasser when he's drivin' down the road! My nephews boy is staying with me thru' the rally and he pointed and clicked out the window as I drove by about 65 mph. (posted speed limit. :p )

Better late than never???? The news here said Hells Angels and Outlaws. Just read in area weekly that about 150 Outlaws took over a tiny towns' BP station for a while, not letting others in, so they could fuel up. Guess the owner came out pretty good, though. Just too bad they chose to keep others out.

It seems pretty apparent to me that state law officials had reason to expect problems this year. Maybe it was because of the big Hells Angels deal at Cody, WY preceding the Sturgis Rally.

Actually, most of the deaths are due to road accidents by some people apparently not well enough prepared to handle their bike, going too fast, or having mind altering substances in their systems.
