What strikes me as funny is that nobody seems to realize the demand for 'average' angus cattle. A bull that was breed average in every trait would be an absolute dream to market. In fact he could even be 5lbs short of breed average on milk and still be good.

Check out Weaver Angus in Fort Collins, Colorado. They never did get caught up in the popular bloodlines, and you can actually get a moderate angus. I've bought females from this place, and they are easy fleshing, 1100 pound cows with great udders and dispositions.

Were can you find out more info on this Weaver Angus? All I can find on a search is a sale date or a Weaver Angus of Illinois. This might strike some people odd but I would like to find some semen on some good balanced moderate Angus the kind you are describing with great udders and dispositions. The options I have found are very limited, I am probably going to have to ask around from individual breeders to find what I want.

The quote above was mostly from Wyoming Rancher not Northern Rancher. Anyway, does anybody know where to look for some semen on balanced angus other than the major semen catalogs?

I've got a pretty solid 011 son that Fraser's and I might draw again-we've pretty much used up the first batch we collected on him. He's a coming six year old and has been a good bull. Not very big though-there's a bit of a story of how I came about getting him.

Well, NR, don't keep us in suspense. Let's hear the story.

As for semen on balanced angus, I'd say to contact Diamond D Angus, Valier, Mt. They've been raising these kind of cattle for years. They never chased the fads, just quietly did what they were committed to; and now they've been discovered. They do have a program that has been in progress for years. Not a hit-and-miss operation by any means. I think you'll be impressed with their cattle. They score their cows on dispositon, udder, disposition. They give you a cow/calf weight ratio and they are very astute, honest people.

And then of course, there is Kit Pharo. Pharo Cattle Co.--
www.pharocattle.com

He has some of his own cattle but has to depend on co-operator breeders for a lot of his bulls. Make your own decision. His sales have been hot and I know ranchers that are really happy with his bulls. But his philosophy is controversial. And there are a lot of co-operator breeders. I guess you can go to Diamond D and view their program with one stop. I like that.

Ohh he wasn't put in the sale because he wasn't very big framed-I asked them to ultrasound him and he AAA marbled at less than 5mm of backfat-basically on silage and choppped straw ration. His mother, grandmother and great grandmother are still in production there and have never had a calf over 75 pounds. really leaves good udders and good easy doing cows. fraser's have some sons and grandson's coming up in their sale. I'm getting to the poiint it's hard to run him naturally so we'll have to draw him or sell him I guess. Really looking forward to the Lad baldies out of his daughters. He's not a real imposing bull but he winters on hay and snow and keeps getting the job done. I guess even a blind pig can find an acorn once in awhile.

There is an article in the Tri State this week "Adaptiability, body condition closely connected."

Are your cows adapted to your environment?
If so: Percent Pregnancy should exceed 93%
Percent calving in 6 weeks should exceed 90%
Percent death loss should be less than 3%.

It is "Beef Talk" by Kris Ringwall, Beef Specialist, NDSU Extension Service.

She says "In terms of adaptablility, some cars are gas guzzlers and some are more efficient. The same is true for cows."

As for your bull, NR...those have been the kind of bulls that purebred breeders sold as young bulls in their production sales, then go back and find...to use back in their own programs.

He's from the same herd I bought my Hereford bull from-they run a couple hundred black cows also. You can phone murray at 402 787-2341 to find out more. just say your asking about the 'wee beastie' he'll know the bull.
