Cowboy Hat Project...

Ok...... a friend of mine ordered a hat from a vendor at the NFR on Dec 4......she put $250 down on it, with the balance due when the hat was completed. Which they told her it'd be the middle of January.
Middle of January came and went, no word from the hat people. She emailed several times, and heard nothing.
The middle of February came and went....still no word. So she called...left numerous messages. Finally the man called her back, and told her he forgot to order the hat. That it'd be done by the middle of March. Well the middle of March came and went. No word. So she called and called. Finally the man's wife called her and was rather nasty. Said, they didn't NEED customers like her.
Well....the way I see it.....if they don't NEED customers...then she doesn't NEED their hat. And she perdy much agreed. So she called them and told them to refund her money. NOW!!!
I sat and looked at these hats online.....then the same vendor was at Houston. I went to his booth......acting like a potential customer. Asked about this line of hats......and he told me, "We only do these hats for "Special Customers" What does that mean??? If you have the money in hand to pay for a hat, what difference does it make who you are????
I played the dumb blonde and asked forty million questions about how the hats are made. And he was dumb enough to tell me. (I don't think he was playin dumb) With the economy like it is right now, you'd think they'd be happy to serve anyone that walks in with $$$.

So....I told this friend that I would play and see what I could come up with in the way of making one of these hats. So......I sat down yesterday, with an old freebie resistol someone gave me. It's only a 3x....so if I messed it up, no big deal. Here's my results so far. I still hafta paint it. When it's done, it's supposed to look like tooled leather.

So am I on the right track???

Well I personally don't feel right about posting something like on open forum. To me that's bashing a company. I'm not out to do that. Just stating the facts of this incident.

Would I wish this kinda thing on any of my ranchers friends? No definately not. If you were lookin to purchase one.....and asked me is it or is it not "such and such" company......I'd give you an honest answer.....but only in a pm.

Look for some leather tooling patterns. They have some cool ones for molded bowls which are in a circle which would work great for this.

Then I kept pluggin along, til I had six coats of paint....startin to look like leather now.

Now I have it flipped over, with one coat of paint on the underside of the brim. When I get all those coats of paint on it, then I can start with the detail work.
