Took me longer than I planned to get back to this, but I did want to post these other photos.

Heifer calf out of the Lund bull pictured earlier:

Some steer calves out of the same bull. These are all late March/April calves out of 3 year old cows.

Checking the barley. Not a bumper crop, but pretty good for 9" of rain.
The rain kinda skiped SE Mt. but it came at the right time.

Where did you see the red, haymaker? I noticed it on one cow--I thought it might be from parasites. Mr. FH wormed with an avermectic last fall (shame on him) and didn't worm them this spring. (Shame on him 2x). Our cows won't eat mineral good enough in the spring to use Safeguard wormer in the mineral (32SG) so they are just stuck til fall.

Wyomingrancher--The calves are cut with a knife. We have very knowledgeable guys do it and have no problems. He used to band them at birth, but gave that up. I only know one rancher that uses a burdizzo and they have someone they highly trust do it. Our buyers prefer knife cut.

Why did you think burdizzo?

haymaker i think your seeing the baby hair on the calves. They will turn black this winter.

The "RED" that FH talks about is across the withers on cows that are lacking copper. They can turn almost grey from that.

FH- did you get rain last night? I saw where some areas in the southeast got quite a bit-- down around Albion...

We picked up .15 here on the river- but a good .4 up north on the wheat fields where we really needed it....Thundershowers predicted for the weekend :D
