Coyote callers and cowpokes converge

Peach Blossom and I were gathering some open cows this afternoon to take to a sale. Some friends had asked permission to call coyotes, so when they saw us they came over to visit for a little while.

A couple of coyote catchers came calling. Since one is considerably taller than the other one, we had him stand down low in a cow trail. The other chose the highest spot nearby that he could find.

I got a chuckle outta their "camo" outfits.....tree branches...n not a tree in site.

I'm so glad we don't hafta have windbreaks for our cows....the only shelter they have are the trees. Shelters them when it's rainin, if the wind's blowin, n when the sun shines.....multipurpose trees LOL

We enjoyed our visit with the coyote hunters, but consequently didn't get to town very early. It was just six o'clock your time when we pulled in. We thought about going to the movie "Flicka" but it had already run its course and was gone. I lucked out, due to the fact that I made it in with twelve cows on the 24' trailer, going at a pretty fair rate of speed. On the way home, just about to our turn-off, a trailer tire blew out. It was sure easier to change with the trailer empty instead of containing twelve cows.

Did they kill any coyotes?

At least two. They are entered in a week-end calling contest, but are more out for a good time than anything. The tall man lives in Illinois, but lived in this area back in the '70's. He comes out once a year for this particular event.

Most of the yote hunters around here are the grain farmers... Think they do it to keep busy in the winter.. They won't get going until late December around here.. They kill a lot every year but I think we have plenty in reserve... Some folks are really into it and do the contests and stuff too... I suppose it is as addictive as all the other types of hunting, maybe that is why the wife keeps telling me to leave the furbearers alone...

Hi everybody, yea as for calling the coyotes, my dad did for years. It is a way to help control them and take out the ones who have mange and the plague. Dad has several plagues that he and his partner has won over the years, but he is retired now and doesn't mind showing them off to whom ever stops by. :) Why they even won the best story one year, for a coyote grabbing the end of his pard's gun barrel. There were  :!:  still the teeth marks on the gun barrel to prove it.
