Crosses in cow herds

Just noticed a question asking if a Charloais bull on a black and/or black baldie cow is good. Very good question and a prime example of what the industry needs to answer.

Currently, in most of the larger feedyyards that are selling grid and/or formula cattle to the major packers, I find the following breed colors to be dominate; black, black baldies, black motleys, dark nosed Charloais crosses, lighter Charloais crosses(very few white Charloais), Red Angus based crosses as solid reds, red baldies and red motleys. There are very few if any lighter reds as evidence of Gelvieh or Limo crosses and very few if any light colored Simmentals. Right or wrong, that's what is being fed. However, you can find exceptions to the majority, but that does mean that is the norm!

The Charloais and Angus cross seems to make an excellent carcass end product that not only makes money for the feedyard, but fits most of the carcass product mixes going out the back door.

As stated to me by the head of all Natural Beef sales for a major packer,"we cannot get enough of the Choice and Prime carcasses to fill our product mix, therefore we are taking more fat cover on fed cattle to hopefully insure more of the cattle make Choice and Prime". Doesn't always work, but that's what is happening. To fit this product, we need more English, English cross cattle with excellent genetics.
