I don't understand the need to give the Congressional Gold Medal to the Dalia Lama. Seems it has no upside and only a chance to hurt relations between the U.S. and China.

Seems to me such awards should be given to people that help improve things in the U.S. not cause them more problems :?

Now how has this old man in a colored bed sheet caused the US any problems?

He's harmless....he's a good symbol of peace...and his country was taken over by a larger more agressive country for no reason at all.......sound familiar????

Some things are just good things to do...and honoring him hurts no one.

We are in a time of tense relations around the world and that includes China. There is no purpose served in giving him an American Honor. Maybe he is good but there is a lot of good people around the world are we to invite all them to the White House and give them some award?

It is about as timely as Pelosi and the Turkey situation. The U.S. needs to start looking out for our own interest because no one else in the world is going to do it!

Washington needs to quit wasting time with all this crap and start taking care of America's interest that is why what we pay them to do!

Just my 2cents....I was watching something a few days ago about some of the political/economic type protests that are going on in China, which actually weren't met with tanks and bullets....so maybe things are improving. It would seem that if the attention could be turned away from the internal unrest and the US could be villified for honoring the Dalai Lama, that the Chinese governmet would probably spin the situation in that manner. What are they going to do, follow Jimmy Carter's wheat embargo stupidity policy and withhold plastic junk from WalMart?

China is mad about this, China and Russia have a big part in how we do things in the middle east and especially Iran, which could very likely dwarf the problem we are having in Iraq at the moment.

Bush is the leader of our country, he should put our needs and interest at the forefront of his decisions. The Dalia Lama is an old man, been around for a long time. It is a matter of timing for me not rather he deserves some award or not!

World Wars have been ignited over little things, lets say the U.S. bombs Iran, China may decide to side with Iran because of bad relations over issues like the Dalia Lama and our relationship with Taiwan.

The world could very well be on the brink of another World War, and if so China will play a large part of it.

Its all in the timing, why play with matches when there is people dumping gasoline all over the place. Why is it now so important for Bush to be the First President to meet with the Dalia Lama? And why was it so important to give him the highest award a foreigner can receive?

Why poke a stick at a lying dog, when it serves no advantage to do so? The Dalia Lama is more than a religious man, he represents a very strong political view and agenda and now is not the time to butt heads with China over a subject they take very serious. It serves the U.S. in no way that I can see, and that is what the Presidents job is to serve the U.S. not Tibet.

I see,you think its better to keep the super power of China on your good side.Nothing wrong with that thinking.I'm wondering though, and I'm being serious,if China hasn't already taken a stand on whos side they're going to be on.China knew what level of lead US and Canada accepted, yet how many millions of toys have been recalled.Call it paranoia but makes one wonder doesn't it.

It is not a matter of keeping them on our good side it is a matter of no reason to stir the pot. Kind of like the Turkey issue with Pelosi.

I think we should take a lot stronger stand with China on lots of issues. I just see no need to involve ourselves in a heated issue between China and Tibet. I don't understand the reason behind it. Politicians have a reason for most everything they do, why all of a sudden is it important for the President of the U.S. to meet with the Dalia Lama and on the first time any President has publicly met him give him our highest honor?

It does not add up or make since! China views it as a slap in the face, and I see no upside to doing that at this time in history. If we are going to slap them in the face then lets make it something that counts not such a sore subject as the Dalai Lama and issues in Tibet.

I think you are looking at the Dalai Lama as a religious leader, but he is every much a Political figure that can stir up crap just as much as any politician.

The Dalai Lama has been in the U.S. many times, just not sure what the motivation is for this meeting and Award.

Now maybe Bush is trying to make a statement to China and I am missing the point. Or maybe he is hurting our relations in another country. Motivation and timing are the issue for me!
