Dead Calf

Pulled a dead calf out of a cow yesterday. The calf had it's head around to the side and was dead when we started to pull. It even had it's own fragrance when it came out. The cow is not cleaning real well. Do you think a shot of Oxytet is in line or would Pen G be better?

I'd give Noromycin 300 (really like that stuff) mainly because of its long activity and not having to give second/third shots- and stick a handful of Sulfa Bolus's in the stinky end..

Years ago before they outlawed it-- the long acting "Combiotic" pen/sulfa shots couldn't be beat imho....

Agreed, OT. That's what we USED to use.
But then we used a lot of stuff we can't any more.
And that new stuff wasn't one of the choices BMR gave us. :D

Like one of our favorites, Etherated Camphorated Oil...sure
sad when they took that off the market.

With the price of cull cows in Canada right now, use the shortest withdrawal time product so you can get rid of her ASAP... :D

I usually give them oxytet and infuse them with warm water/betadine diluted to strong tea color/more oxytet in solution... I use a calf tuber for this.

Luckily only had one cow not clean this year, and don't really know why, except she's older, 13 years.

In this area of the country the cows clean very well as long as there is a good dose of selenium in the mineral. You don't have to go very far north and you can get selenium toxicity.

Ditto.... This what we would do.. Use a clothes pin if ya have too.

We had a cow standing around with a bent tail and really not settleing down to calf day befor yesterday.. We got her in and checked her.. Calf was coming right and the water bag was not broken.. But was some blood there. So we broke the water bag ( not normal fluid) and I couldn't feel no movement of the calf.. So we gently pulled the calf and the embellical cord didn't break until we had the calf almost out. But the calf was dead anyways.. :( I thnk he was dead and with no movement from the calf the cow just couldn't get down to buisness.. We gave her the same medicine and hubby said she didn clean yesterday.. She was a Shurtop Supreme cow.. We did put her in the cull pen....
