Death of the truth

There is no truth to the rumor . . .
By LEONARD PITTS JR.
[email protected]

For the record:

Sarah Palin did not call dinosaurs ''lizards of Satan.'' Barack Obama is not a Muslim. That list of books that Palin supposedly wants to ban is a fake. Obama doesn't refuse to say the Pledge of Allegiance. The picture of Palin wearing a flag bikini and hefting a gun is a fraud. Obama is, too, a U.S. citizen. Palin doesn't want Alaska to secede.

These and other rumors are, of course, busily bouncing all over the Internet. I dispute them only for the aforementioned record and not from any expectation that doing so will make the slightest bit of difference to the willingness of people to believe whatever they want. I just need to hear truth spoken aloud, need to be able to testify to future generations that it was stated in black and white somewhere in the midst of the maelstrom of mendacity, of lies and damned lies, that now dominates the political debate.

May I share with you the one that sent me over the top? It purports to be a column by Maureen Dowd raising questions about Obama's Internet fundraising. But reading it, I knew immediately it wasn't by Dowd; the leaden, pedestrian prose sounded nothing like The New York Times' breezy doyenne of derision. Two computer searches confirmed my suspicion: The column was a lie with Dowd's name on it.

The brazenness of it struck me. That, and a self-preservationist streak that said, if they can do it to her, they can do it to me.

Maybe you're wondering what's the fuss. Politics and lies, after all, go together like carrion and flies, and this year is no different. Palin's claim that she told Congress ''thanks but no thanks'' on that ''bridge to nowhere?'' Not quite true. Obama's claim that he co-authored a bill to help homeowners threatened by foreclosure? Fudged.

Still, there's something new at work here. After all, this stuff used to be the exclusive province of political operatives; we the people were content to leave lying to the professionals. These days, shadowy groups and shadowier individuals are in the thick of it. The Internet has made it ridiculously easy; you can sabotage a campaign without ever changing out of your PJs. And the swift boat campaign of 2004 showed the potential: John Kerry's bid for the presidency was fatally wounded by unfounded questions regarding his heroism in Vietnam.

Over the last 20 months, we've all seen the next step on this downward spiral. Meaning the right-wing campaign to paint Obama as Osama bin Laden in a suit. But the chorus of prevarication attending Sarah Palin's arrival on the national scene should dispel any notion that one ideology has a monopoly on mendacity.

Factor in the mistrust (both conservative and liberal) of what used to be regarded as the ultimate arbiters of fact -- i.e., news media -- and you have to wonder whether truth still has a future here.

Like so many other things in this country, it has become splintered and factionalized. These days, every ideology has a ''truth,'' and everybody's ''truth'' has an agenda. Nothing is settled and known. All things are up in the air, all things open to interpretation. Indeed, truth hardly seems to be the point anymore. Lies serve just as well. As a result, we are no longer grounded in the same shared body of facts and in a very real sense, have no basis upon which to reason together, no basis for shared mission, purpose or identity.

Those bases are, not incidentally, foundation blocks of nationhood.

Already the political sides in this country talk past each other like Mars and Venus. If the games of obfuscation and fabrication political hacks play really are becoming common among real people, it can only get worse.

They think they're helping a candidate win an election. Truth is, they're helping all of us lose a whole lot more.

This article is straight up. I caught in it the sadness and frustration the author is feeling...I'm feeling the same, I just can't express it as well. Both parties are playing fast and loose with the truth, and that is depressing.

This paragraph is especially meaningful and yet unsettling:

Like so many other things in this country, it (the truth) has become splintered and factionalized. These days, every ideology has a ''truth,'' and everybody's ''truth'' has an agenda. Nothing is settled and known. All things are up in the air, all things open to interpretation. Indeed, truth hardly seems to be the point anymore. Lies serve just as well. Thank you for posting this, Van. :)

It seems most every presidental election year, the History Channel will run a documentary about political campaigns. If you've never seen it, you might look for it. Since the beginning of this nation, politicians have been twisting the truth about their opponents and their stands on issues. One thing that's different today is that they get the spin out faster via the internet.

But, IMO, in the 2000 Republican primary Bush/Rove took campaigning to a new low with the personal attacks they made on John McCain. They won. In 2004 it got even worse with the swiftboating of John Kerry. They won. McCain may not be the brightest bulb in the room, but he's not stupid. He knows why he got his behind kicked by Bush in 2000. When Obama tried to talk about issues; McCain responded with personal attacks: celebrity ads, rock star ads. We've all seen the emails going around: Obama is a Muslim; Obama is the anti-Christ, Michelle called us "Whitey", etc. How many anonymous emails have you received from left wingers/Obama supporters?

With all due respect to Mr. Pitts, get used to it. Unless Republicans are willing to give up Rove-type politics, Democrats will use them, too.

Even Rove has said that McCain ads "went too far." Isn't that a hoot!

You are using the tactics you are condemning. Rove also said the obama campaign went too far(biden did also)

In 2004 it got even worse with the swiftboating of John Kerry
You forget that fellow soldiers brought this up after he accused solieras of terrible acts that were not true.

But the lowest of low is when the Dems attacked Palins kids, have they no shame.

Obama called for people to leave Palin's pregnant daughter alone. He pointed out that his own mother was only 17 when he was born. What about Republicans?

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."
.......John McCain, 1998

Chelsea was eight years old when this lovely quote was on the front of major newspapers. The shame about Palin's daughter lies with the McCain campaign who issued a PRESS RELEASE on her pregnancy and blamed the Dems for forcing them to make it public!

McCain officials said the news of the daughter's pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called "mud-slinging and lies" that have circulated on liberal blog sites.

And it is still going on. Doesn't he have the leadership to step up and reiterate what he said. Surely he can lead and get them to quit-or can he?

McCain shouldn't have said what he did but that does not give free rein for obama or his obots to attack as he pleases. Didn't your mama tell you two wrongs don't make a right?

The shame about Palin's daughter lies with the McCain campaign who issued a PRESS RELEASE on her pregnancy and blamed the Dems for forcing them to make it public
And the dems were having a field day attacking the kids and still are.

Sigh. Well, so much for the bipartisan nature of THIS thread. Congratulations.

By the way, this is from the cnn article you posted:

(CNN) -- Former Bush adviser Karl Rove said Sunday that Sen. John McCain had gone "one step too far" in some of his recent ads attacking Sen. Barack Obama. Karl Rove said both candidates are guilty of going too far in their attacks. Rove has leveled similar criticism against Obama.

For God's sake, even the evil, racist, sexist, child eating, old lady kicking Republican Karl Rove sees both sides of this issue..............but you don't??!! Do you have any idea how that makes you look?

In your arrogance, you come out on this board and call the Democrats the “Party of Death,” while perhaps a million people have died from Bush’s unnecessary war in Iraq.

The leader of the Republican Party, George W. Bush and his Conservative friends, Tom Delay, Newt, Hastert, Boehner, have bled this country dry. Gasoline, health care, pharmacy, supermarket, fertilizer, our children’s college funds, working American’s retirement programs, inflated home prices, damaged our military, tortured people in my name, they’ve taken all we had and gave us nothing in return. Salary for middle income workers has been stagnate under Bush, while the rich got richer.

And what happened to our money? Hey, it was NOT taxes. You know how you hate to pay taxes. So it didn’t go to improving education, roads, bridges, dams. It didn’t go for medical research or propping up Medicare or Social Security, or local law enforcement. It didn’t go to protecting our borders or improving our military. It went into the pockets of fat cats on Wall Street, CEOs of hedge funds. They got millions for frittering away OUR money.

And now that they’ve lost our money, they want a bail out from those middle class taxpayers. And they want it with no strings attached. Sec Paulson asks to be the only decider, no oversight from anyone, about how to spend $700 Billion of our money.

These are the people whose camp you chose to be in, Van. And that’s fine. Everyone makes their choices. I’ve made mine. IMO, there’s not a lick of difference these days between a pile of dog poop and a Conservative/Republican. So in response to your question, “Do you have any idea how that makes you look”, the polite response is “no and I don’t care.”

Is it possible you make your own credibility and favor with the press by your openness and availability- which has been lacking lately with McCain (no open press conference for 3 weeks) and Palin- being kept completely in the isolation bubble....
Its not nice to PO the press....

Palin Continues to Hide from the Press

McCain, Obama, and Biden all were extensively in the news yesterday talking about the meltdown on Wall St. In contrast, Sarah Palin was at the U.N. for a couple of photo ops but she refused to talk to reporters about foreign policy or anything else. She has not had a single press conference since being picked for the VP slot and keeps the press at a great distance, except for photos while she makes an ice cream run for her family. She has to be careful because the story about her is rapidly changing from the hockey mom who shoots moose to one about a person not ready for prime time and unable to answer tough questions on her own. She hasn't become a laughingstock like Dan Quayle yet, but if she continues to duck the media, her press will get worse and worse.

When was Obama's last real press conference with the bigtime news?? TV talk shows and late night comedy do not count as a press conference.

Perhaps last spring??

Led by the Chicago press corps that has covered Obama for years, the candidate today faced a barrage of questions in what turned out to be a contentious news conference.

Questions centered on why his campaign had denied that a meeting occurred between his chief economic advisor and Canadian officials as well as questions on his relationship with Tony Rezko, a Chicago land developer and fast food magnate, now on trial for corruption charges.

Obama claimed that when he had first denied the meeting between Austan Goolsbee and any members of the Canadian administration he provided "the information that [he] had at the time."
He added, "Nobody reached out to the Canadians to try to reassure them. They reached out, unbeknownst to the rest of us; They reached out to Mr. Goolsbee, who provided them with a tangible conversation and repeated what we've said on the campaign trail."

When did the meeting take place? Why did the Canadian officials reach out? Did Goolsbee not come forward right away and admit the meeting to Campaign Manager David Plouffe and Obama when both denied it last week? These are questions that went unanswered as the press conference was cut short.

Much of the back and forth, though, between reporters and Obama was about his relationship with Tony Rezko, with reporters demanding to know why new details were emerging from the case though Obama and his staff had claimed they had been forthright with all the details.

Obama and Carol Marin, political editor at NBC5 in Chicago and columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times, tangled over how up front Obama had been about Rezko. Obama cut off her line of questioning, saying that Marin's questions were personally motivated.
"Carol, can I just say I have to really dispute this,” Obama said. “It is true that you wanted an individual sit down, but I don't think that's fair to speak for the entire Chicago press corps because on this -- Let me finish," he interjected as she tried to interrupt.

“Before you were reporting on these issues I had an avail,” Obama said, pointing to members of the Chicago press corps who were present, “where I literally stood there and took every question people could think of."

Lynn Sweet from the Chicago Sun-Times then jumped in and told Obama that he may have answered questions for the Chicago press, but many other reporters hadn't had a chance to hear him on the issue.

"I just want to make that point an issue," Obama said. "You may still have questions, which I'm happy to answer, but I don't think it's fair to suggest somehow that we've been trying to hide the ball on this. There have been more attacks. There have been several hundred stories written on this issue. The fact of the matter remains unchallenged."

Obama went on to detail his relationship with Rezko, repeating that the land deal had been a "bone-headed" move.

"On the other hand, there have been no allegations that I betrayed the public trust,” he argued. “There have been no allegations that I did him any favors.”

A third reporter followed, asking Obama why information about fundraisers or other details had not been answered by the campaign. He raised the issue of how details were emerging in the case, like the fact that Obama and Rezko had toured the property that resulted in the questionable land deal between the two men.

Obama continued to say that reporters' interest was due to the fact this was "a hot story."

He claimed that his campaign would be happy to provide the details, but when asked why the campaign hadn't been forthcoming, he said, "What happens is these requests I think can go on forever, and, at some point, we've tried to respond to what's pertinent to the question that's been raised."

He added, "There's no question that he raised money for us, and there's no dispute that we've tried to get rid of that money."

Toward the end of the press conference, the question of Goolsbee's meeting was raised again. Obama answered curtly and then walked out after a staffer called last question. The press erupted with shouts, but Obama continued to walk out.

He paused only to say, "Come on guys; I answered like eight questions. We're running late.”
On the flight from San Antonio to Dallas, Obama, unsurprisingly, did not wander back to make small talk with the traveling press corps.

They seem pretty smart to me one thing leading up to the down slide of Obama was over exposure, they tried to stuff to much of what they thought was a good thing down our throats to soon, to much and to early!

Palin has gave interviews that completely let America know where she stands on issues. Now it is time to refocus the election on McCain, it is time for him to look presidential in the credit crisis. And keep people wanting more from Palin that can be released in a slow trickle.

Nothing helps McCain more than the media dogging Palin and then when she speaks she seems intelligent and articulate and all that negative press backfires. I say they are running a smart campaign these last few days.

In Contrast look how much Biden has stuck his foot in his mouth! And how desperate the Obama campaign looks
