Hillary: I’ve ‘Evolved’ on Gay Issues
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., speaking to a gathering of gay and lesbian groups, said she has "certainly evolved on gay issues,” but fell short of enthusiastically supporting ‘gay marriage’ in New York.
Clinton, who is running for re-election as Senator in New York and is considered a potential Democratic candidate for president in 2008, said she wants Democrats to "force the Republicans to enshrine discrimination in the Constitution,” according to the Gay City News.

The New York senator addressed the issue of so-called ‘gay marriage’ one day after the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that the state legislature should decide on the legal rights of same-sex couples to have equal rights to traditionally married couples.
"My position is consistent. I support states making the decision," Clinton told the News. "Because I think that it should be in the political process and people make a decision, and if our governor and our Legislature support marriage in New York, I'm not going to be against that."
Eliot Spitzer, the Democratic candidate for New York governor, is backed by Clinton. He is a strong supporter of gay marriage.
Clinton cautioned the audience members that they may need to change the terms in the debate if they hope to persuade Americans to support their side on ballot initiatives nationwide.
