Define Energy

I hear the term energy used a lot. When I thing of energy, I think fat or calories. Lots of people are actually refering to Total Digestable Nutrients (TDN). They defineately are not the same thing.

I hear energy and I think of 4 years of nutrition classes and shudder a little bit.
Calories or Joules is the way to think about it, but for nutrition comparison purposes I tend to think in TDN.
Energy partitioning in feed is a big topic.

I think of energy as the ambition required to go outside, feed hay, and calve in, horror of horrors, late February and March, with "STUPID" written all over my forehead, which is covered by a cap because it's too cold to wear my hat. :) :)

When evaluating energy on a feed analysis I go to the Mcal/kg line.

different people think of different things when the term energy is referred to in feeding cattle. When I am balancing rations for growing cattle the energy value that I look at is NEg (net energy gain) and is measured in Mcal/cwt.

You know what they say Soap, "You can't fix stupid."

Yeah, I know. Fortunately we aren't calving quite as early as normal. Due date for the heifers is tomorrow, and the cows are scheduled to start on March 1st. We've actually had a pretty good go of it so far, with just a few calves on the ground. :)

I think that is a good point. It is a wee bit different to balance a ration than compare feeds, or having a coffeeshop conversation.

If it's too cold for a cowboy hat, I don't need to go outside! I have pulled my silk scarf over my ears and under my hat once or twice. :D
