Democracy or Republic or Both or Who Cares?

Reaer there is no hair splitting. In a true or pure "Democracy" we the people could vote by a simple majority to have all newborns euthanized at birth and it would become the law of the land. "Majority Rule".

I did not use the word hair splitting. I was responding to backhoeboogie so take that point up with him.

Our form of government is a hybrid imho.

Your right....we elect representative to represent us. Unfortunately about 100% of them forget that as soon as they are elected and we get things like this health care plan passed in spite of the majority message that is sent to our representative in the house and senate.

interesting read R2-

I am neither a republican nor a democrat so I don't believe that I have a bias as to which label to use.

But I still stand by republic-
for the simple reasoning that we have a binding contract- the U.S. Constitution- that regulate ( or at least is supposed to) what laws can be passed, no matter what the majority thinks. Unless you can get together enough of a Majority to ammend the constitution.
I would see a true Democracy as 51% rules.
In some ways I can see a somewhat democracy in that when enough people become outraged enough, and become vocal enough, we do see the politicians respond out of fear of reprisal in the voting booth.
