Democrats Can’t Avoid Fiscal Cliff Blame

For all of the country’s justified concern about the inability of the Republicans to make a deal, the fact remains that the Democratic-controlled Senate is even more of an obstacle to an accord. For Majority Leader Harry Reid and his party to act to avoid the fiscal cliff, he will have to do something that he has failed to do in the last three years: pass a budget plan of any kind. The Democrats have sat back and enjoyed the brickbats thrown at the GOP for their dysfunctional behavior, but have done nothing themselves to make a deal other than to play the role of cheerleaders for the White House’s class warfare rhetoric. With only days left for action to avoid the automatic enactment of measures that could potentially devastate an already weak economy, it’s time to for Reid and his caucus to put forward a bill that could actually pass. If not, their reliance on public opinion only blaming Republicans for the impending debacle may ultimately wind up a colossal misjudgment.

Their grandstanding about taxing rich people has allowed Democrats to avoid any real discussion about reform of the entitlements that are sinking the country. Neither the White House nor the Senate has put forward a coherent plan or a proposal worth voting on that addresses this issue, without which any talk of a long-term solution to the problem is impossible.

Folks have to realize-- Repubs made a huge screw up- miscalculated by a mile where the voters of the country set--- agreed to a sequester
(or, as we sometimes like to call them, the big, dumb spending cuts that no one wants): Mandated by the Budget Control Act of 2011 (better known as the debt ceiling compromise),
thinking they were the chosen anointed ones of the country/world and would change everything after the election...
BUT
THE REPUBS WERE TOTALLY WRONG-- and instead of winning, lost ground and are now in a position of sucking hind teat (if they can even find one)...
Reid may put forward the Senate plan (that's been there for months for the Repubs to accept) -- but won't unless he knows they'll accept it it... Otherwise he'll let the Repubs take the country over the Clif they stupidly agreed to a year ago...

well, if the majority wants more money spent on them, then that's probably the best course of action, for the Country, as a whole

I see you've noticed it too, Hypo. With OT, it's always......"well, the majority want X", or "the majority voted for this or that", etc.

He's posted more than one story about the pubs finding themselves in the minority as though it's like having the plague.

Though I've long considered him just an internet troll based on how many times he contradicts himself on important issues, I may have been mistaken. I'm now suspecting that what I attributed to trollish behavior is actually the posting pattern of someone totally devoid of principles.

As the political winds change, so do his "beliefs".

So now that the majority rules and the constitution and bill of rights is dead,is it possible that we could see the return of slavery?Maybe areturn to women with no vote.Just a simple majority vote away.

Hey, as long as the majority are for it, those things are hunky dory in OT's book.

Would require not just a majority- but repealing a Constitutional Amendment for each of those...

No where does it say in the Constitution that the government can not run on a deficit or borrow money...
In fact that's how we financed the revolutionary war and set up the new Republic-- which caused Washington and Hamilton to have to levy the first tax- the whiskey tax- which led to a Tea Partyier type rebellion which Washington called up the troops to put down....

By definition that is exactly how a true democracy works. Mob Rule. No matter what the issue if it carries by a majority it becomes the law of the land.

What's with the "we" business? Haven't you already told us you were undecided if you'd have supported the revolution?

Using that stupid logic OT, there are a million things the government can do without Constitutional authority.

Speaking of the US Federal government spending American's tax dollars, here's what a poster on another forum said about the subject.....and I think he said it best.

Not that anyone has ever objected to paying for it, but I'm guessing the tax rate required to maintain our infrastructure, and all of the other enumerated powers in the Constitution, is somewhere in the 5%-10% range, once we had paid off the national debt. The objection is to the dollars spent on unconstitutional transfers of wealth, not to the pennies spent on what is in the Constitution.

Why so many otherwise seemingly intelligent Americans today look the other way while Washington grows out of control is beyond me. And I say "seemingly intelligent" because I'm referring to those who are otherwise fiscally responsible. The remainder want to see Washington's power grow because they know that's where the gravy train locomotive pulls out of the station.

I doubt woman will lose the right to vote.. but forms of slavery or involuntary servitude may creep back in..

it works that way in many of the world democracies/dictatorships.. and states like California..

in a true democracy all we need is a liberal supreme court and all white men can be barred from voting..

democracy is the most misunderstood word in the free world..

not really just use the correct legalese and you can do alot..

felons are still barred from voting and involuntary servitude has been used as a means of punishment for crimes

so if a right can be limited,.. then the limits can be stretched to include many by democracy..
