Why Arizona's Sheriff Joe Arpaio must go - and soon
Thursday, March 12th 2009, 12:37 AM

Thirty-five thousand people from all over the country signed a petition calling on the departments of Justice and Homeland Security to investigate Arizona's infamous Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Meanwhile, Arpaio received a letter from the Justice Department Wednesday informing him of a probe into allegations of discriminatory and unconstitutional searches and seizures.

Finally, it seems that the abusive Maricopa County lawman could get what's coming to him.

The petition, initiated by America's Voice, a Washington-based group for immigration reform, was delivered to the agencies Wednesday by House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Min.), Immigration Subcommittee Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), other members of Congress and national immigration advocate leaders.

"Sheriff Arpaio has consistently abused his office in violation of federal law. It is time for the federal government to step in and uphold the rule of law in this country, even in Maricopa County," said Nadler.

Investigating this man - and stripping him of the power to violate with impunity the rights of Americans and immigrants - is not only urgent, it is a matter of fundamental decency.

The publicity-hungry Arpaio has five full-time media relations specialists to publicize his stunts. Yet the spin doctors can't hide the fact that his indiscriminate street sweeps of Hispanics are motivated by racism.

A blatant example of his contempt for civil rights occurred on Feb. 4. Arpaio rounded up 200 immigrant detainees and forced them to march, shackled, into a segregated "tent city" surrounded by electric fences in the Arizona desert.

To make the abuse even worse, these men were being held on pretrial detention and had not been convicted of any crime.

Not surprisingly, a whopping 2,700 lawsuits have been filed against Arpaio, including numerous allegations of civil rights violations.

Recently, Conyers, Lofgren, Nadler and Crime Subcommittee Chairman Bobby Scott (D-Va.) sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano demanding an investigation of Arpaio's alleged misconduct.

Arpaio received an Immigration and Customs Enforcement contract through the so-called 287(g) program, implemented under President Bush, which authorizes local lawmen to arrest immigrants without cause.

The letter calls for a review of the Arpaio's contract to insure it is not "used to justify the racial profiling of any resident of Arizona."

So abusive and abhorrent are Arpairo's actions that the situation has sparked a nationwide outcry. Last week, more than 5,000 people marched in Phoenix to protest his tactics.

Arpaio has come to symbolize everything that is wrong with immigration in this country. Yet he is a hero to the racist, irrational anti-immigration fringe.

Ironically, while Arpaio has made a career out of his "toughness" in dealing with immigrants, there are 40,000 - 40,000! - felony warrants outstanding in his jurisdiction.

In other words, as Sheriff Joe mercilessly terrorizes hard-working immigrants, real criminals are having the time of their lives.

WITH THIS in mind, the petition makes a strong request for justice.

"Sheriffs should be held accountable for fighting crime, not rewarded for spreading fear," the petition says. "We request an immediate Department of Justice investigation into Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his appalling tactics."

And so do we.

To add your name to the list of 35,000 people who have signed the petition, visit www.sheriffjoemustgo.com.

I say ignore the 35,000.

Was reading where most of the signatures were from ACORN.

Where is the outrage?

ACORN Petition:
Dear Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano,

We, as ACORN members, supporters and allies, are writing to urge you to suspend Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's his 287(g) agreement with the Federal government.

Sheriff Arpaio has long boasted of his "tough" approach in Maricopa County, but this has time and again resulted in a complete disregard for civil rights, due process, and basic human decency, culminating in his most recent affront to human rights: marching more than 200 undocumented prisoners, in chains, through a public street to a tent city surrounded by an electric fence.

Arpaio has long terrorized Latino communities with neighborhood "sweeps," looking for undocumented immigrants to arrest and deport. On his watch, according to a report by the Goldwater Institute editorialized about in the New York Times, violent crime and homicide rates have gone up significantly, along with "a long and well-documented trail of inmate abuses, unjustified arrests, racial profiling, brutal and inept policing and wasteful spending." [1]

Arpaio made headlines in December [2] when he arrested four ACORN members and staff just for clapping during a County Board of Supervisors meeting. [3]

Therefore, Secretary Napolitano, we are asking that you immediately suspend Apraio's 287g agreement with the United States government.

Sincerely,

The undersigned

Wonder where OT is on this? Please OT, let's have some more lies....

I like Sheriff Joe-his ideas-his work on apprehending illegals- and doubt if their petition will go far.....

One question, I've always wondered was what is that counties legal/lawyer expenses to defend all the law suits....Not sure if any other Sheriff could get away with it- especially the jail issue, since there are Federal jail guidelines that have been in place for 40 years-and as I've known of many jails closed down by Federal Judges for less... :???:

I also have to wonder where Senator McCain, as La Raza's "voice in Washington" stands on this :???:

I'm aware of that- and any Sheriff that hasn't been investigated probably wasn't doing his job...Just like with a law suit where anyone can bring a suit against you- anyone can make complaints and cause an investigation...From experience I can tell you--It doesn't mean they are going anywhere....Unless he is screwing up......

You're a weak, two-faced puppet. To say a sheriff that hasn't been investigated by the U.S. Justice Dept "probably wasn't doing his job" is a sham and a lie.

To not be upset that ACORN has the power to help get a sheriff investigated is cowardly to the highest degree.

All of this racial profiling argument is stupid if you live on the mexican border your gonna profile mexicans. As far as the way he treats people in jail well they are in jail. If they werent at least accused they wouldn't be there. Shoot other than we were glad to be rid of janet Joe would have been allot better at Homeland security.

I bet less than 5% of Sheriffs in The United States have been investigated by the United States Justice Department! Probably less than 1%!

Why accept second-hand information when you can go directly to the source? Here's the truth, OT;

Although the nation’s largest Latino advocacy organization is a nonprofit that must remain nonpartisan because it gets millions of U.S. federal grant dollars, the group’s president helped lead a Barack Obama pep rally over the weekend during an annual conference in a California city close to the Mexican border.

The extremist Mexican group National Council of La Raza clearly endorses Barack Obama, which is why La Raza President Janet Murguia stood by as Los Angeles’ renowned Chicano mayor (Antonio Villaraigosa) praised the Illinois senator during the group’s annual convention in San Diego. A former Hillary Clinton campaign chairman, Villaraigosa assured the crowd of thousands that Obama is Latinos’ best hope for reforming the nation’s federal immigration policies

I believe that anytime a Title 83 Jail violation or Title 9 civil rights violation is filed against a Jail or Law Enforcement entity- the law requires an investigation...
Many/most times this investigation only curtails sending the reports and file info- and its handled without going any further...Or the BOP/DOJ will advise how to take actions to change conditions/policy to alleviate the problem- and if they comply - nothing further is done...

Over the years many times we called in the DOJ- whether State or Federal to do an investigation- just to clear the Department from false allegations and remove any perceptions of impropriety....

John McCain: La Raza’s voice in Washington
By Michelle Malkin • February 4, 2008 01:46 PM

You want straight talk? McCain’s tongue says he’s “listened and learned.” But his heart is with La Raza, the militantly ethnocentric, anti-immigration enforcement Hispanic lobbying group that honored him in 1999 and whose annual conference he keynoted in 2004.
------------
Thus, La Raza-The Race has launched a new “We Can Stop the Hate” campaign–smack dab in the middle of the campaign season–to redefine tough policy criticism from the Right as “hate.” They protest that it is “racist” and out-of-bounds to talk about reconquista–even as the McCain campaign boasts a “Mexico First/”Just A Region”/”Free Flow of People” outreach director who’s practicing it out in the open for the leading GOP presidential front-runner.

Yes, an ethnic separatist group that calls itself “The Race”–a group that has embraced John McCain and vice versa–has the gall to crusade against “hate.” Chris Kelly notes that La Raza-The Race head Janet Murguia is calling for networks to keep immigration enforcement proponents off the airwaves and that both La Raza-The Race and another open-borders group are pushing for Fairness Doctrine policies to shut up their foes.
