Nick Lloyd, who suffered several broken bones in his face when a group of men attacked him and a friend early New Year's Day in downtown Denver, has to undergo surgery to put plates in his face and wire his jaw shut. (7NEWS)

Three days after Denver police announced they were investigating whether three downtown beatings were cases of the nationwide phenomenon known as the "knockout game," a sergeant said Thursday they were neither part of a game nor necessarily linked.

At least three New Year's Day attacks happened between 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. in the city's LoDo neighborhood, where tens of thousands of revelers were spilling out of closing bars and onto the streets. One assault was reported near 16th and Blake streets, another happened at 20th and Market streets and a third took place at 20th and Larimer streets. Victims were left unconscious and suffering broken bones. Each involved as many as four suspects.

Though all of the victims reported being punched out, the assaults are apparently not part of the "knockout game," in which someone tries to incapacitate a random stranger with a single punch, said District 6 investigations Sgt. Larry Graham. The game has no motive beyond a knock-out, Graham explained in a five-minute YouTube video the department released Thursday afternoon. At least one of the LoDo beatings was also a robbery, and, in another, a man was punched more than once after he was down, Graham said.

"We have assaults downtown and in other places that we see routinely due to to alcohol, high concentrations of people, and things of that nature," Graham said on the video. "The knock-out game we have not seen yet."

News of the beatings put those who frequent LoDo, with its numerous bars and nightclubs, on edge. Police have announced several other robberies downtown in recent days but have connected none of them.

Although the victims of the New Year's Day attacks were all white men, and the suspects listed as black men, detectives said they have no evidence they were racially motivated.

Detectives aren't even certain if the beatings are related, Graham said. The investigation has been challenging because victims' memories are hazy, few witnesses have come forward and police have found no surveillance video.

Typical liberal denial.. define an issue so narrow that nothing is considered until it is way to late..

if black men were beat by white teens, there would be a racial uproar, and a man hunt of epic proportions..... this political correct world we live in does nothing but keep the poor poor, the less fortunate as victims, and the white man as the evil Satan.

Sad, but true. We need a LEADER to overcome this, one that brings the country together, not further division as we have now.

DENVER - With big crowds expected downtown for the Broncos this weekend, Denver police said they will be taking special precautions after a series of assaults that happened early New Year's Day. There are still no arrests.

Although the incidents are similar the "knock out game," police think the attacks were not inspired by the game where people brutally attack strangers and try to knock them unconscious.

"There was a male struck several times who continued to be assaulted while on the ground, and that also doesn't fit the description of the knockout game. While we consider these assaults serious, and we hope to bring them to a prosecutable resolution, they don't appear to be knockout game cases," Denver Police Sgt. Steve Warneke said.

The four assaults from New Year's day all happened in lower downtown.

Two of the victims are still recovering. They say strangers beat them up and then ran away. It happened around the time bars were closing.

"I suffered a really bad concussion. I was out for about 20 minutes," victim Matt Draper said. "I got a head laceration on the back of my head."

Nick Lloyd, another victim, has a broken jaw, a fractured face and will undergo surgery Friday.

Some of the precautions police are implementing are extra patrols and other tactics a police spokesperson said he didn't want to divulge to protect officers and their plans.

Despite the recent attacks, LoDo crime was down nearly 20 percent in 2013 from 2012. Aggravated assaults specifically were down more than 30 percent.

The majority of the 2012 assaults happened between 1 and 3 a.m.

A New Year's Day victim said he doesn't think downtown is unsafe overall. He said people should be extra cautious when bars are closing up and the streets get packed with people.

We already know what happens when a white guy knocks out a black guy He is charged with a Hate Crime just like the guy in Texas. Report after report of Blacks knocking out Whites and nothing happens, Obama and Holder set silently by. But one white guy does the hitting and Holder jumps right in and makes an example of him.

But then what do you expect from this Administration? Months go by with scandal after scandal being reported and Holder does NOTHING but a Republican Governor's staffer does something questionable and guess who is there within minutes requesting it be investigated and demanding every email from the entire state to see if the Governor was involved. I'm willing to bet if the Dems don't find the smoking gun they will make up one just like they did against Palin. :x

Obama and his corrupt administration has destroyed the US and it is going to take many many years to recover fomr the damage he has done.
