Wyoming recruiters head back to Michigan
By The Associated Press

GILLETTE - Recruiters from more than a dozen employers and officials from the local economic development organization are heading back to Michigan next week in an effort to lure more workers to Wyoming.

It will be the third recruiting trip to Michigan by the Campbell County Economic Development Corp. Job fairs have been scheduled in Flint and Grand Rapids in Michigan.

"Our goal is to find workers to work in Campbell County and actually all of Wyoming," said Susan Jerke, marketing director with the Campbell County Economic Development Corp.

"We're all looking for workers and not just for right now but to get to the word out that we have jobs for now and for the future," she said. "There are such opportunities here. We're a well-kept secret."

As Haymaker would say: Good Luck :!:

There is a lot of this country that has a worker shortage.
Fallon County being one of them. All the oilfield employers are
seeking help, some of the restaurants have had to close for a
couple of days due to lack of help. And we're not alone, I
think all the oil field areas are facing the same thing.

Hard for people to relocate. I think Wyoming is doing a good thing.
I'm passing this along to our SMART (Southeast Montana Area
Revitalization Team) organization.

Thanks for posting.

Those Alabama folks couldn't stand our winters, I'm thinking.
Michigan has winter more similar to ours, and they've got a bit of an
unemployment problem, if I remember correctly.

Good thought though, alabama. I'll pass it along.
We don't have many Afro-Americans in Montana or Wyoming,
and I'm sure it is weather related.

My original thought in posting this was kinda a "tongue in check" deal. We're not in Michigan, but we had this happen a number of years back & the results weren't good. Alota folks moved into the area, bought up bits & pieces of ground, built new homes & went to work for manufacturing companies an hour or so away. They brought their "ways & life styles" with them and tried to force them on the existing community. We got strip-malls, big box stores and the like; it changed alota things that the rural life had previously offered. Now the manufacturing is leaving, along with the people & we're left with their messes.
Hope it doesn't happen to Wyoming!

My son went up there last fall to try and get a job. Same pay as around here and NO place to live. Gillette has the same problem with housing.

Both my boys went and took the emshaw test and couldn't get hired at the mines. If they wanted to work for the same wages as around here and not have a place to live, other than a high priced motel room, then it would have been fine.

There is no incentive for them to go out there and work.

Seems like at the mines, unless you know someone to get you a job, you won't get one. :x

Baker might be the same deal. If you happen to be there when something comes up, then you can have a job. But you might have to travel 75 miles to the site and then you don't have anywhere to live.

They whined a few years ago, that Wyoming was the "cowboy" state, but they couldn't hire any cowboys. Pay them a decent wage, and you will get cowboys. Treat them like crap and you won't. Been that way since they invented cowboys.

Your sons came to Baker and couldn't find a place to live?
Or they went to Gillette?

I know the town (Baker) is working on that problem; planning on building
some kind of housing. They sure need workers. I know of some
housing that has happened fairly recently. Looks like our SMART
office needs to be aware of who needs housing and who HAS
housing.

We have constant 'help wanted' ads in the local paper AND
the Finder out of Bowman.

Both. Not that was affordable.

My buddy up there, said he'd make them a deal, but my son could make as good of wages down here. All the better paying jobs were taken.

In Gillette they can't get anyone who wants to really work, to work in the food industry I was told.

It's amazing! You can set there for a half an hour and watch waitresses just visiting and not doing anything, as they don't have to worry about being fired, because poor help is better than no help, evidentley. It was that way at every place we ate. Fastest was Micky D's and they looked to be hispanic workers.

I saw it and still shake my head. They tell me that they are paying 10.50 to 11.50 an hour for waiters and waitresses and also in the fast food places. Cost of living is kind of high for housing and they are building a mile a minute.

I think if a family who wanted to work, started a new restaurant with good serves and decent prices, they could go 24 hours a day and do great.

Seems like anymore, all people want is their paycheck...or that is
the way with many, if not all.

Service stinks. Waitresses don't smile, throw the menu at you...
very rude.

Most of the food service industries here seem to be doing fine.
Let's see, we have 10 places to eat in Baker. There were 11,
but the Legion Steakhouse closed because they couldn't get
help. They were only open 2 nights a week anyway, but had
really good prime rib. Plus we have a eating place in Plevna.
That's quite a few for a town of 1800.

Odd that your boys found wages the same here as anywhere, JB.
Everyone I know that works in the oilfield makes really good money
here. It is hard to get an electrician or plumber because they
are so busy in the oilfield or oilfield related industry.

That was one of my points. If you are there, on the ground, and a job opens up or your buddy hears about it, you can get a better one. If not, when you hear about a job opening, by the time you get there, it's already filled. And you can't affod to live in a motel and eat at cafes, until the higher paying job comes along.

I'm sure, those who are close or live there, do have good paying jobs.

My point was, how do you afford to live there, until one of the good paying jobs, comes along?

I forgot, you probably don't get The Finder out of Bowman, do you?
Lots of jobs advertised.

If they are still interested, I could give you names of places
advertising for help. WBI had/has some job openings; 4J Well
Service, Mitchell's, and many others.

Just let me know, I'll get them to you.

LOL this is kinda funny.....to us anyway. Our son is workin in the lil mom n pop store here in town. He started out flippin burgers to make gas money for drivin back n forth to his college classes. He likes to cook.....so, why not, don't matter where ya go around here or how far you drive, your gonna make minimum wage to start out with, so why not save the gas goin to work by workin close to home. Well he got a promotion after about 3 mo of flippin burgers, now he's workin the register and someone else is workin the grill, n gotta .50cent raise.
The funny thing is, he's learnin to deal with all sorts that come into the store. Twice this weekend, on our stop in town, he was havin to put up with someone tellin him they gave him more money than they did. One woman said she'd given him a 10 that had a 20 stuck to it......he remembered she'd given him a 10 and a 1. So after she left they rewound the security video....and you can plainly see a 10 and a 1. He's now gettin a taste of just how far people will go to git a few dollars. Was kinda funny seein him standin there behind the counter, standin his ground and lettin folks know they aint gonna walk all over him.(the customer aint always right)
So......when I paid for our sody waters, and he gave me change from a 5......I said, "I gave you a 10 didnt I??? :p :D " Just messin with him LOL
