Democrats Don't Have the Votes for Healthcare Takeover

From a top-level source in the House comes the news that the Democrats are still short of the 216 votes they need to pass Obamacare.

They have decided, however, to go for broke on Sunday and attempt to pass it whether or not they have enough support. They feel that only by forcing a vote can they force members off the fence.

They hope that by employing all means at their disposal, they can round up enough votes for passage. But, if they don't have the votes, they will allow the measure to be defeated. One source called it a "suicide run."

The League of American Voters is strengthening its efforts to get the word out about President Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi's healthcare takeover, which includes healthcare rationing and skyrocketing taxes.

Even the Chamber of Commerce is now running new ads linking healthcare to the deficit and America's possible loss of an AAA rating on its bonds.

Keep on phoning and keep on working!

Today, Caterpillar's VP and Chief Human Resources officer, Greg Folley said if health care passes, his costs will soar by 20% to $100 million or more, IN THE FIRST YEAR:

"We can ill-afford cost increases that place us at a disadvantage versus our global competitors," said the letter signed by Gregory Folley, vice president and chief human resources officer of Caterpillar. "We are disappointed that efforts at reform have not addressed the cost concerns we've raised throughout the year."

A letter Thursday to President Barack Obama and members of Congress signed by more than 130 economists predicted the legislation would discourage companies from hiring more workers and would cause reduced hours and wages for those already employed
Caterpillar said this provision, along with eliminating the tax exemption on drug subsidies, would raise its health care costs by at least 20%, or more than $100 million, in the first year after the health-care overhaul program.

That big increase would largely be a noncash charge, stemming from adjustments to Caterpillar's tax liability. Accounting rules require that the long-term tax costs be included on the company's balance sheet at one time, even if the taxes paid annually on the subsidies are actually much less. Although the health-care legislation would be phased in over a number of years, the tax effects of the legislation would be felt in 2010 if the bill becomes law this year.

"From an accounting standpoint it hits right away," said Roland McDevitt, director of health care research for Towers Watson. The tax charges also would count against companies' earnings at a time when corporate profits remain fragile because of the weak economy.

McDevitt estimates that a company with 25,000 retirees on subsidized drug benefits could see its 2010 earnings reduced by $70 million.

from what I read, the bill will devastate the corporate incomes this year of many corporations with large workforces.. and the end result over the next ten years will be outsourcing the jobs.. (good jobs with good benefits.. wiped out by more costs) seems to me the 30 million with out care will need to be adjusted for those soon hitting the unemployment lines..

There was a Congressman just on and he said what the House will be passing tomorrow is the Senate Bill with the amendments so if that is true can Obama sign the Senate bill into law before the Senate passes the Amendments the House is voting on.

Or is the Congressman wrong and what they are passing is the Senate bill with all the dirty deals and that will become law upon Obama signing it within minutes not the 5 days he promised he would wait. Then the House and the Senate go to battle over the amendments that the Senate Democrats themself are WARNING THEY WILL NOT BEABLE TO PASS?

Are the House Democrats being sold a bill of goods that Pelosi will not beable to deliver due to the Senate?

The totals:

Definite YES:
192 Democrats, including Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), who voted No last time, in November.

Definite NO:
178 Republicans, including Joseph Cao (R-LA), who voted Yes in November. He’s in the Stupak bloc.

Definite NO:
30 Democrats.

24 Democrats who voted No in November:
Bobby Bright, Mike McIntyre, Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, Walt Minnick, Artur Davis, Chet Edwards, Frank Kratovil, Mike Ross, Dan Boren, Gene Taylor, Larry Kissell, Collin Peterson, Ike Skelton, Jim Marshall, Mike McMahon, Charlie Melancon, Tim Holden, Ben Chandler, Health Shuler, Rick Boucher, Allen Boyd, John Adler, Lincoln Davis, John Barrow.

6 Democrats who voted Yes in November (“S” for confirmed Stupak bloc):
Mike Arcuri, Bart Stupak (S), Dan Lipinski (S), Jerry Costello (S), Joe Donnelly (S), Steve Driehaus (S).

12 potential Democratic No-Yes flip votes:

7 lean Yes:
Bart Gordon, Brian Baird, John Boccieri (Clyburn Three), Suzanne Kosmas, Betsy Markey, Scott Murphy, John Tanner.

4 undecided:
Jim Matheson, Harry Teague, Travis Childers, Jason Altmire.

1 lean No:
Glenn Nye.

19 potential Yes-No flip votes:

5 additional Stupak bloc (Stupak-curious):
Brad Ellsworth, Kathy Dahlkemper, Henry Cuellar, *Marion Berry, Marcy Kaptur.

6 lean Yes:
Paul Kanjorski, Dina Titus, Betty Sutton, Allan Mollohan, Bill Owens, Tom Perriello.

8 other undecided Democrats:
Zack Space, Chris Carney, Nick Rahall, Solomon Ortiz, Earl Pomeroy, Bill Foster, Harry Mitchell, Melissa Bean.

1 lean No:
Marion Berry.

Democrats need 24 of a combination of the 12 potential No-Yes flip votes and the 19 potential Yes-No flip votes. So they need 24 out of the remaining uncommitted 31. If you’re counting leaners, Democrats need 11 of the last 16 uncommitted.

But what about previous YES votes that Democrats need to work to keep YES? The White House and Democratic leadership on Capitol Hill are prepared to lose some of these. The first six names below are of most concern to the Democratic leadership and most likely to bolt.

Stupak
Carney
Rahall
Berry
Driehaus
Arcuri
Dahlkemper
Pomeroy
Ellsworth
Hill
Grijalva
Gutierrez
Owens
Cardoza
Costa

Of the 37 currently serving Democratic members of the House who voted NO on health care in November, there is a highly targeted group of 15 that are publicly undecided that Pelosi hopes she flips from NO to YES to make up for any of the above YES defectors.

Democrats know they will not be able to flip all 15. Probably fewer than 10 are willing to flip on the final vote.

The first nine names listed below are the top tier NO-to-YES targets for the Democratic leadership out of this group of 15. And no Democrat on the Hill seems to think leadership will get all nine of them to flip which is why Democrats are trying to keep their YES defectors above to seven at a maximum.

Baird
Gordon
Altmire
Boccieri
Kosmas
Murphy
Markey
Teague
Kucinich
Tanner
Boyd
Matheson
Nye
Barrow
Childers
Davis - TN
