Dickinson RFID Studies

Heres an article on the Dickinson ND study- I posted this in a thread on the Bull Session, but know some don't read that. I think this is some of the problems that we all should be looking forward to

Be sure to read the paragraph toward the end of the page about what occurred when the tag reader broke down...I don't know about where you all live, but its a small fortune to fly anyone in to this part of Montana, from anywhere....Its bad enough with the newfangled electronic scales breaking down during the middle of shipping (Give me the old balance ones anyday)- now we get computer readers...

OT do you know when that study was done? If I remember right most of the RFIA being used now are half duplex. Don't ask me what that means as I have had it explained but couldn't explain it myself. I think tags have come down in cost and readers are getting better all the time. I know if the USA was buting RFID tags they would be cheaper yet.

We have had one tag so far this year that wouldn't read. That is on over 2500 tags. If the reader breaks down you can still read the tags with you eyes, there is the same number printed on the tag that the reader reads.

Big Muddy-Not sure the date when it was done...I do know that MSU's pilot program is running into the same problems with tags not reading and poor tag retention in the pilot program they are following thru...Their study is built to follow to the feedlot and slaughter.....

Andy- I'm not sure if I know many that want to go out and rebuild their corrals so that the cattle go on or off the scale individually (preferably with plastic, so it doesn't interfer with the reader(s))--when you are shipping 1000 head in a day-94% means 60 head- 85% (which MSU was finding) means 150 head- 66% like the ND test eventually comes out to be means 330 head-- all that will have to be cut back, weighed back, and held to be headgated or roped (most these scale corrals have no chutes or headgates) and have the individual ID tag recorded manually (and thats only if you can figure out which one didn't read) elseways you will be running them back and forth all day...Make a one day job into 3- or it will cost for extra labor...

I've already heard individuals and scale associations questioning where they are going to get the money to rebuild their corrals and buy a reader- now Brad S says they need 3 readers to make it work...Wait til I tell them that good news

Andy, Do you mind telling us which readers you find are the best buy for the money? Do you use the "wands" or the "panels"?

I am currently working on a project where we are setting up a large auction barn to be fully compliant with NAIS by the end of this year. The barn will also be a tagging station for producers who wean on the trailer.

Haven't figured out which readers we will use yet and need some advice.

Mike- I would be interested in seeing the final costs involved in setting that up- and what they will charge the consignor to cover the costs of those added functions.....

I see where the House of Representatives has told USDA that they won't dole out any more money for mandatory ID pilot projects in the next Farm Bill until USDA comes up with some projected cost estimates of the total NAIS program....Could be interesting to see what their projected cost is.......

OT, We have done a cost projection and anticipate that the sale barn owner will charge the producer only for the tags plus $1 in order to gain numbers of customers with source verified cattle.

You can bet that the tags and hardware costs will fall tremendously when everyone gets on board too.

We use wands. i haven't been around panal readers, so i can't coment on those. The best reader I have been around is the allfex blue box reader, the only problem is it has to be hooked to a cumpter all the time.

Just some ideas, when it comes to panel readers. (I like the portable breifcase) OT needs one put under his Christmas tree this year, if Santa is listening.

Forgot to mention, if you are tagging and DNA sampling for Associations etc. there are tags that do both. (RFID and DNA)
