A new study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine suggested that the low-carb diet is the best way for weight loss and cholesterol level, compared with the low-fat diet and the Mediterranean-style diet.

The two-year study trailed the weights of 322 participants who were randomly assigned to adopt one of the three diets: a low-carb diet, a low-fat diet and a Mediterranean-style diet.

The low-fat diet emphasizes grains, whole wheat pasta and bread, fruits and vegetables; the low-carb diet suggests meat, fish, chicken, eggs, and just a few vegetables; and the Mediterranean diet includes lean protein and vegetables, along with lots of olive oil and nuts.

While low-fat dieters lost an average of 3.3 kg (7.3 pounds) over the two-year period, those following the Mediterranean diet shed 4.6 kg (10.1 pounds) and the low-carb dieters 5.5 kg (12.1 pounds).

And the low-carb diet excelled at improving the cholesterol profile, reducing the total cholesterol-to-good cholesterol ratio by 20 percent, compared to just 12 percent in the low-fat diet.

"A low-carb diet, by giving up pasta, and bread, and potatoes, lowers insulin levels in the body," Dr. Eric Westfall of Duke University said. "And when there's less insulin, the body produces less harmful cholesterol."

Researchers are quick to point out, however, that different diets work for different people. For example, the Mediterranean diet was best for lowering fasting glucose levels for diabetics.

You know, NOT!!! I eat beef 8-10 times a week...we eat over an animal a year, along with Canadian salmon and even some Tyson poultry and pork when I can't find any local. The untold secret about eating lots of meat is that it stays in your digestive tract longer and your body tells your brain that you AREN'T HUNGRY!!!!!!!!!!! So you don't want that bag of chips, candy bar, or piece of cake...which are the carbs that make you fat!!!!!! So you don't have to feel guilty about drinking that good sipping whiskey after a good thick steak!!!! :D :D

A lady goes to the bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops
of water. As the bartender gives her the drink she says,
'I'm on this cruise to celebrate my 80th birthday and it's today...'
The bartender says, 'Well, since it's your birthday, I'll buy you a drink.
In fact, this one is on me.'
As the woman finishes her drink, the woman to her right says, 'I would like
to buy you a drink, too.'
The old woman says, 'Thank you. Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of
water.'
'Coming up,' says the bartender
As she finishes that drink, the man to her left says, 'I would like to buy
you one, too.'
The old woman says, 'Thank you. Bartender, I want another Scotch with two
drops of water.'
'Coming right up,' the bartender says.
As he gives her the drink, he says, 'Ma'am, I'm dying of curiosity. Why the
Scotch with only two drops of water?'
The old woman replies, 'Sonny, when you're my age, you've learned how to
hold your liquor. Holding your water, however, is a whole other issue.'
