Gardens in the forest: Trinity County bust shows pot alive and well on federal lands

A major recent marijuana bust on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest highlights that pot growing on public land remains a significant issue, even as law enforcement has stepped up efforts to combat it.

Over a period of five days last week, law enforcement agents with the U.S. Forest Service, Trinity County Sheriff's Office Drug Task Force, and the California Department of Justice raided several gardens and pulled up tens of thousands of marijuana plants. They arrested one man, Gauldry Almonte-Hernandez, which the Forest Service described as a “displaced foreign traveler” from Michoacán, Mexico who fled from one garden when officers arrived.

Almonte-Hernandez was arrested on federal charges of manufacturing a controlled substance, and faces 10 years in prison.
