Doctoring calves

I hate this hot/cold weather we have been having for the past month. Had to go doctor my calves on the mountain as they all have mild cases of Pnemonia. White discharge from their noses and a raspy breathing sound. Put them all in and gave them Baytrill today. Seems like we only have this problem when the weather can't make up it's mind. If it stays cool or just turns off hot, they are fine. It's in the 80's for three days and then back down in the 50's. We froze here last night and then reached 79 today! Sorry for the whining! Must be caused from my rope burns I got roping the one calf I couldnt coax into the corral. A 400 pound bull calf will make a guy bring his horse next time. Thankfully myself makes a pretty good drag and a clump of sage made a dally post. Other than me losing a little hide, it all worked out. Any of ya'll having respitory troubles this year?

H do you give your calves a nasal shot?? We've had the same thing and we found that if we give this nasal shot we don't have any problems till fall. I can't think what they call it right now but I know someone here will and your vet will too...

Not me personally ,that is why I like winter calving; but there are alot of folks around here that are losing a few and having to treat them all as well. The hot cold, wet cold ,cold wet etc this time of year is really hard on the little ones.

Good luck with them H ,but you did the right thing by gathering them all and giving them the right meds asap.

So far so good here.

Typically treating calves here starts when we have hot days and nights freezing or below as well. Usually late Sept or into Oct. That hot cold pattern doesn't agree with calves here thats for sure. One or the other is O.K., but not both.

hope your calves all get well! I had one start to go down a little. She seems fine now after a little LA 200 and then vaccinated at branding.
