Does anybody get the carcass data on their cattle???

Just curious, I was wondering if any of you get carcass data on your cattle, so you know how well they do. We have been getting data on ours for 15 years and we know how our cattle do.

Just curious

We have gotten it, Hanta, kind of on and off.
I got real discouraged with the amount of retests and the difference
in the date when they were retested.

I'm just afraid that some of this data depends on how good a day
the person collecting the informatiion is having.

Same thing happened to us...the gal didn't want to go through all the numbers so she just did a lump analogy...which was NOT what we put EID tags in every critter just to be lumped together...needless to say, hubby and the buyer weren't happy campers...but that has only happened once.

First year we have retained ownership.. We got a lot of Data back on them.. Some of it gave me some food for thought, some was suprising in a good way and some in a bad.. Been talking to the feed lot guy a bit about it, he is telling me that there was nothing there that would dictate changing anything but I am not so sure..

Retested? When collecting grading info on the slaughter floor, it's kinda hard to do that again.........ain't it?

More cattlemen need to get more data on what kind of beef they're selling.

There should be a law requiring every cattleman to get data on a certain percentage of calves just to know what in the heck he's raising. :???:

Mike do you suppose they were getting Ultra sound Done?

I have gotten it back but here in Canada the packers should be sending it back to any producer that Age Verifies. They don't.

They charge here which is kind of off putting.. You can go as simple as a bulk value of what percent choice and average yield for almost nothing all the way up to a few bucks for everything from ribeye score to KPH fat and all sorts of other things.. I would think it would be something that folks would want out there so we can see what we are doing right and wrong genetically...

For 3 or 4 years, the guy I bought bulls from bought my calves, and fed them out. We got the data back on them. It was nice while it lasted. I have been promised data since, but no delivery. These ol' lean Chars were grading 80 % choice and paid premium each of those years.

We have been collecting individual data for about 10 years. the data that is being collected today is much better than 5 years ago. I agree with Mike that every cattle producer should get data back on there calves. Some of the worst carcass cattle we have ever fed were a fancy set of black steers and the set that always does the best is a set of crossbred calves that just look like run of the mill cattle.

I think it was ultrasounding. It's been a few years...
showing my ignorance here, aren't I?

I was through Angus Genenetwork and US Premium Beef, as I recall.

It costs the feeder $6/head to get the data. He had Gelbvieh/Angus cross and fed out our straightbred Angus steers. He finally quit doing it because
of the retests. He was good about sending us the data. It was interesting,
because some of those calves (CAB) made a good premium. But what was really interesting is that a couple was a $140 deduct. Took quite a few good ones to make up for those two.

Like I said, it's been awhile since we got anything back. They just tell us that a high percentage made choice...and buy the calves again.

For a couple years the buyer sent us data on our steer calves only ours.

A few years ago we kept data on each individual mother and the calf she produced. It involved weighing the calves individually at least two times but we felt strongly then it helped us thin out the mother cows that were not producing quality calves. I feel it made our cow herd more productive cutting out the slackers. JMHO

I have been collecting data for seveal years now and the product coming from this place is consideralbly better than when I first began collecting data. I had more room for improvement than I had expected.
