For you commercial cattlemen do you really care if the bulls you are buying are clipped. I convinced a good friend to stop doing it and it hasn't hurt his sale a bit. I have a friend that is fighting the weather to get his done in time for his sale-I just wonder if it's needed at all. I think most guys in the cattle business can appraise a bull au natural.

Just to play devil's advocate  ............. What if an unclipped bull is because he hasnt been handled or is wild? You could buy milk in an empty pop can or you could buy it in a clean, safe container like a gallon milk jug. I understand that most folks can see right through any clip job and see the faults and strengths a given bull has. But, to me, by cleaning a bull up, clipping him to show him off a little is simply another way for folks to market their cattle. The people with their name on the sign is vastly more imporatnt to me than how sharp the clippers are. And if a bull is dressed up a little by a reputable outfit, I don't mind at all.

Well not knowing how to clip very well and not willing to pay to have it done. I just made sure they were clean. I did cut the hair on the sheath and squared up the tails but other than that I left them alone. I also did not spray them with WD40 to get them to shine either. My sale this year is April 10th so hopefully they will be shed out some. I will run them thru the chute and clean the tag off them and maybe clip a wild hair but not much.Sale ended up being 2 weeks earlier than normal with easter taking my origional date.

A lot of bulls aren't clipped but torched with a propane torch. Have seen some real wrecks and in general is a bad idea perpetuated like a lot of other bad ideas by greed of the seedstock industry.

then obviously you didn't know what you were doing  I'm so glad its bull sale season again, so everyone can get their belly kicks in to the PB breeders....why don't you go back to talking about whose commercial cows can be fed the least amount

this is the first year we have ever saved bulls to sell. saved a whopping 3 bulls ! already have one sold as a yearling. sold it to a guy who told me he liked the look of my cows...wanted to buy some heifers...said all we had was bulls for ssale, ..he looked, he took!

no clipping, no washing or waxing...NO EPD...just looked at the bull, saw mom and dad, made his decision.

THAT is the guy I want to sell bulls to.

I hate to clip, but we do it as it is necessary. Here are a couple examples:

1. When you go to trade off or sell your car, do you take it dirty and with a cracked headlight or do you spend a few bucks and clean it up to hope you get the best price possible.

2. When you go out on your first date trying to impress someone - do you go shaggy hair, unshaven face, or do you clean yourself up to impress her?

We clip ours up, take good pictures, have a nice catalog, do a good video, as everything you do to make them look good or better than your competition will help yoou sale day. Shaggy bulls sale day or in your ads will not impress most. I know that cowboys can see through a good haircut, but first impression is very important.

We hire someone to come in and clip heads, tail, and sheath, and they torch the rest. We have torched for close to 20 years, would hate to guess how many we have done and we have never hurt anything with a torch, however we have had a couple come out limping, or ears hanging from pulling back hard, but never has the torch hurt one.

Was just curious as to what other commercial guys thought-if it wasn't necessary it would save everybody alot of work. Most of them are from the pretty is as pretty does school of thought.

I like this. We buy bulls from commercially oriented PB breeders. Some clip, some don't. Usually we have been to see the bulls pre-sale in the unclipped version and we go with a list of a very few select bulls we want to look at based on the performance/ultrasound/pedigree information.

I don't begrudge the clipping if it pays for itself in bids, as I know a lot of folks buy bulls differently than we do. We have always had fantastic luck/service with the people we have dealt with over the years. They oftentimes do a ton of work for not a lot of credit...
That said, there are a few in the saint ridden commercial side that aren't all angels either.

There are a few of you guys on this website who's poop must not stink! Does it make you feel tough to run down seed stock producers? :???: Does it make you feel smarter than everybody else for the first time in your bitter little pathetic life? Or is it simply you are a crooked, lying, worthless sun of a gun and you think everyone must be just like the guy that watches you shave every morning? Option 4 would be you are just plain ignorant. Which one is it? Lay off folks who happen to raise seedstock. The majority are fine, honest people who provide a needed product, just like the majority of commercial guys like a lot of us. If every single bull raising outfit tries to screw with you, what does that say about  YOU? My comments are directed at a choice few who pull this crap every chance they get. Sorry if any innocent bystanders got ran over.
