Drought assistance

Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed today? :? :???:

No I didn't. I'm just tired of reading how wrong everyone seems to think that government programs are for children yet everyone seems ready to rush out and get their government drought check. The problem is yes in order to help children sometimes adults get a free ride but I would rather see an adult with a free ride and a full and warm child then a child starving and cold because society got to worried their parents life would be made to easy with some help.

CRM:

We are in a disaster county. I will tell you that we would likely NOT take the aid if we were not in the predictament we're in. We have lost ALL, 100%, our entire grazing for the fall and winter. Somewhere around 4000 acres to four major fires. While we have enough hay to get through the winter, we'll have to feed hay a lot longer into the spring than normal because some of our spring pastures were burnt, and we also put cows into our calves pastures after the fires that burnt our summer range.

So, what I'm getting at is that we're at the point that we have to send cows out for the winter. Well over 75% of our herd will be going to greener pastures and their winter homes. However, this is at the cost of over $1.00 per day without trucking.

We are at the point that we will take the assistance, although we'd rather not.

In my opinion, the difference between this and welfare is that most on welfare have the opportunity to be wage earning citizens, and are not. We have taken our opportunity to be wage earning citizens and are...

Cheers---

TTB

PS to Don...I apologize for not giving CRM the same statement I gave you. I missed her original post, and yes CRM, if you want this to be a fight take it to the Bull Session where the fight belongs

I don't really think of the drought assistance as welfare because it is what would be known as disaster assistance. The government does it for industry and dos it for areas that are hit my natural disasters.. Agan, we were offered it once and I turned it down because we didn't need it and it would have been a fairly insignififant amount of money for our operation at the time.

If you want to equate CCP, DCP and LDP' with welfare I think you have a much, much better case than equating drought aid.. And most farmers I know of do refer to the DCP and CCP s as their welfare check and even have jokes about it....

Think about this.

Cattle in the west generally run where the land isn't much good for anything else. Drought happens, like it or not. Over a period of years, every rancher with fixed cost such as mortgage payments would be forced out of business when a severe drought comes along.

Those who acquired their land through inheritance or gifts can survive, but others would certainly go down. With drought occuring periodically, eventually it would affect everyone.

In our county, in 2002, where there are cattle and wheat, the wheat was a total loss and there wasn't any grass to be found. Without programs such as crop insurance and livestock assistance, there would be no one left except absentee landowners and CRP owners.

If you are eligible for LAP and don't take it, someday your neighbor who does take it will be able to buy your place. Maybe he will even give you a job.

it doesnt really matter what u call it- if u don't go in and get your share then u are a d---- fool. If we don't get the money the government will just give it to some other fool to waist. At least we are providing food for the world.

Who dictates where what belongs??? I'm not talking RCalf which is touchy or cool for that matter. I don't want it to be a fight and if I were I thought it would go under political bull so perhaps we all have different opinions of where subjects go...........

As far as being able to be a wage earning citizan sometimes ranchers have to leave the ranch and get a job that supports the family and the ranch in town. Plus many wives get town jobs. So I think even ranchers can do more to help themselves much like those on welfare.

Let me clarify I'm not against drought assistance I just don't see what the difference is from those government handouts and say wic? Both are freebies from the government. Oh wait sometimes in drought assistance ranchers get a check that they can use for whatever from feed to pickup payments while with wic nutritional food is purchased by mothers of young children they can't make vehicle payments with wic checks.

I don't have a problem with Diasaster payments, such as what we got during BSE before the border opened, and drought ect. Strange tho that R-CALF denounced our disasters but US one are OK.

Sorry TTB I had to point that out.

How can it be a disaster if you still have saleable assets? Are you wiped out or just set back? What did ranchers do before with no government help? I think cattleRme has a valid point here,If you need money to support your life style, earn it else where, until you can get back on track. It is what you say about others that are on government assistance with no assets to call on. Relying on government handouts is just that,no matter what, that is,what it is.

It is not a disaster, you still have everything you started with before the drought.Had you lost all in a matter of hours, that is a disaster. After one month of no rain, why did you not find a solution, just in case of drought?
