According to police records, Officer Joey Olsen spotted a man lying on the sidewalk in the 600 block of Knapp Street at about 3:30 a.m.

The officers suspected the man to be "intoxicated and sleeping," something that's not uncommon in Wolf Point, said Wolf Point Lt. Brian Irwin.

After the officers identified the man as the sheriff, they brought him to his in-laws' house upon Crawford's request, Irwin said

I wonder if he'll decide not to run for re-election, due to cattle ventures.

Give him a break. He probably got drunk because he felt bad about swindling a couple of old uncles of his out of their ranch. At least his heart was in the right place.

Freedom Crawford, Roosevelt County sheriff, resigns

Roosevelt County Sheriff Freedom Crawford submitted his letter of resignation on Thursday, according to Gary Macdonald, Roosevelt County Commissioner.

The letter is effective Oct. 1 will go before the Board of Commissioners for approval on Sept. 16.

The appointment of a temporary sheriff until the election is being discussed by the Commission and the County Attorney.

Crawford was facing Jason Frederick in the Nov. 4 election.

Frederick beat Crawford during the primary, 1,521 votes to 231, according to the Montana Secretary of State's Office.

The sheriff's race is nonpartisan, and the two candidates with the most votes in the primary advance to the general election.

A month after then-Undersheriff Frederick announced his candidacy for sheriff, Crawford demoted him.

Crawford promoted then-Deputy John Summers to take over.

Crawford earned $53,000 a year for his duties as sheriff and another $3,000 for his coroner duties, according to the Roosevelt County Clerk and Recorder's Office.

Frederick was going to beat him by a landslide... Of all those running he was the best candidate and from what I know of him- I think he will make Roosevelt County a good Sheriff...... They need it with all the added activity they are getting from the Bakken....

the election may be nonpartisan,.. but it isn't free of politics..

A month after then-Undersheriff Frederick announced his candidacy for sheriff, Crawford demoted him.

that happens all around the country.. especially when someone stands up to the party elite select candidate

the former sheriff should have been forced to resign over that let alone passing out drunk on the sidewalk...

Crawford has more testicular fortitude and common sense then that b!tch lawyer in Texas that got the DUI and is now making life miserable for Governor Perry.

Pretty common practice. It's not nice, but seems to be legal and no cause to force the sheriff's resignation over it.
