HARRISON, Ark. -- A minor earthquake shook the area about 5:40 a.m. Friday but apparently few people noticed. The city police department and county sheriff’s department says the magnitude 3.1 temblor didn't generate any calls to them.
The U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program reports the quake was centered about two miles southeast of the center of the city. It says the quake likely caused weak shaking and no damage.

Harrison police Capt. Joe Gilliam says two officers mentioned they felt a little shaking.

I think the largest known earthquake in the USA was in Ark. about 1800-1810?

There were three of them and caused damage for a great distance.. Rerouted the Mississippi river, a couple towns were flooded out and such, had sand geysers and a whole bunch of other things.. I think tehy say there is one ever 200-400 years so we could actually be coming up on another episode... One reason it is so bad is the geological profile of the ground.. There is nothing to absorb the energy so it just keeps going and going and going.. They are starting to reinforce bridges over the major rivers and even having construciton done in some of the larger cities with earthquakes in mind..

We had a tremmor 4 years ago, thought it was a pice of heavy eqipment moving by at midnight.. Than noticed no lights.. didn't figure what it was until the next morning news talked about it.

I was always under the impression that the Mississippi ran backwards for a day or two after that big quake

any truth to it?

I don't thinit was that long but yes, the story goes it did go backwords for some distance..They say if it hits again the Ohio will back up to around Cinicinatti and the Mississippi will go backwords to north of St. Louis but south of Moline/Davenport.. They have shows on the quakes from time t time on Discovery and History Channel. Have a friend who works on the State Disaster council down in Arkansas.. They are spending time one it and have "plans" but the real problem is you probably couldn't be ready for it in reality.
