Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate
In ABC News Interview, Edwards Says He Cheated, but Did Not Father Child
By RHONDA SCHWARTZ and BRIAN ROSS
August 8, 2008
John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with a novice filmmaker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.

In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.

Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test.

Edwards said he knew he was not the father based on timing of the baby's birth on February 27, 2008. He said his affair ended too soon for him to have been the father.

A former campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said he was the father of the child.
According to friends of Hunter, Edwards met her at a New York city bar in 2006. His political action committee later paid her $114,000 to produce campaign website documentaries despite her lack of experience.

Edwards said the affair began during the campaign after she was hired. Hunter traveled with Edwards around the country and to Africa.

Edwards said his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family became aware of the affair in 2006.

Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife's cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter. Elizabeth Edwards has since been diagnosed with an incurable form of the disease.

When the National Enquirer first reported the alleged Edwards-Hunter affair last October 11, Edwards, his campaign staff and Hunter vociferously denounced the report.

"The story is false, it's completely untrue, it's ridiculous," Edwards told reporters then.

He repeated his denials just two weeks ago.

Edwards today admitted the National Enquirer was correct when it reported he had visited Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hilton last month.

The former Senator said his wife had not known about the meeting.

It's not about the sex. It's about losing the public's trust by lying.

The coverup is ALWAYS worse than the crime.

"Buisness"? (sic)

It's not my business.....he's not involved in the public world now.

There are WAY too many other BIG problems in this world to worry and waste time on this.

What kind of silly headline to waste time on... A MAN HAD AN AFFAIR........

But, if he were running today....I still vote for him.

NO you're wrong there. I think a private life is JUST THAT....PRIVATE! You've never seen me here trash on McCain for what happened in his life with his 1st wife and now this one. I don't care is why...it's his private life...end of interest for me.

Really, if Dubya had of gotten him a little " strange", he'd prob not be wanting to run all over the world and start wars with the wrong people.   The man got too many pent up frustrations.

I mean face it....Laura is a bit of bore I'd bet!

I'm a little different than Kola- I think our leaders should have good family values-- and how you treat your wife and kids is an indicator of that...

Altho its not as bad as paying $5,000 for a hooker- or trying to pick up men by playing tip toe in the toidy....

They are reporting this lady had worked for his campaign- kind of like McSames reported Lobbyist paramour was doing.....

He had an affair, it appears that he got her pregnant, and then he LIED about it. What do we have here? Nothing, just ANOTHER major Democrat presidential candidate that got caught lying his arse off. Not really news, anymore.

What do you expect from the party with no standards and where everything is OK?

I didn't say its OK...I don't think its as bad as a guy playing around with some two bit hooker- or some gay pickup in the airport toilet that is much more liable to have AIDs or an STD and then going home and hopping in bed with his wife so she can get it too.....

You don't seem to be complaining about McSame who was playing around with a rich bimbo cheerleader heiress behind his wifes back- which led to his dumping that long term wife and kids because she got fat after she was in an auto accident- or the fact he was reported to be having an affair with one of his "closely tied" lobbyists/advisors during the last campaign- an affair that was so messy that the senior folks of the campaign had to step in and ask her to get lost because there was too much talk ....

Or him calling his current wife a c*nt and a trollop  Some family values there   :( None of these fellas must have much respect for women... :( :(

I think they should get a DNA sample, just to make sure he isn't the father. Funny, when Repubs do something like this it is on all the networks, and played on and on and on and on.

Betcha this thing goes away in a heartbeat.

I think someone needs to force the DNA, just to see if he is lying. So, Dems. jump on me with this one. :p

OH I don't think it will die for a day or two (til the Olympics start)-- and CNN, David Gergen, and several others are already saying he needs to get a DNA test done- and make it all public...

Kind of reminds me of Grover Clevelands race- when he was running for President his opponents (Dems) accused him (a bachelor- and a Republican) of fathering a child with a gal.. Cleveland admitted to paying child support for the child, but since she was playing around with several guys and there were no tests then to prove or disprove it- so he wouldn't admit that it was his....

The Dems started a slogan "Ma, Ma, Wheres my Pa? --- After Cleveland won the race- the Repubs changed the slogan to "Ma,Ma, Wheres my Pa- Gone to the Whitehouse, Ha Ha Ha......

Interestingly the news today was naming all the Presidents that wouldn't have probably stood up to scrutiny of "mistress's" in todays media-- Ike, LBJ, JFK, FDR, Clinton....

Pretty pathetic when you have dough and power and can't find a better looking piece than what Edwards did, especially in LA. At least Edwards manned up and admitted what he did, that's more than Slick Willie can say about that cow Monica. I can plainly see him in my minds' eye, wagging his finger and uttering "Ah did not have sexual relations with that woman....Miz Lewinski..."
