(CNN) - Don't expect to see any new nuclear power plant construction in the near future.
The federal government says it will stop issuing any new permits and license extensions for existing nuclear plants until issues about storing radioactive waste are resolved.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the government's main watchdog agency, says current storage plans are safe and achievable.
But a federal court says the NRC didn't detail what the environmental consequences would be if the agency is wrong.
Right now, there are 14 reactors awaiting license renewals.
An additional 16 reactors are awaiting permits for new construction.
Sixty-four plants across the United States currently operate 104 nuclear reactors. Half are more than 30 years old.
