End of UK beef ban

THE ban on British beef exports will be lifted this week — TEN YEARS after it was imposed during the BSE crisis.

Meat exports will be allowed from Wednesday, with shipping of live cattle to follow.

Beef sold on the bone will remain subject to restrictions.

EU officials agreed to lift the ban after BSE in cattle plummeted. Meat industry chiefs warned it would be a “slow process” to get exports back to their 1995 level of £600million a year.

Europe votes to end beef ban
EU veterinary experts today agreed in Brussels that the 10 year ban on the export of beef and cattle from the UK should be lifted. This means that exports should be able to resume by the end of April or early May.A meeting of the EU Standing Committee for the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCOFCAH) unanimously approved a Commission proposal to allow the UK to export cattle born on or after 1 August 1996, and beef and beef products derived from cattle slaughtered after 15 June 2005 on the same basis as other Member States.

The UK with Hundreds of Thousands of BSE cases can export OTM cattle and beef but Canada with 5 can't.
